Axel and Luci are still asleep when I wake up, so I call Mom.

"Good morning, hunny," she answers on the first ring, and immediately asks, "is everything alright?"

I smile. It's better than I could have imagined. "Yeah, yeah, everything's all good," I tell her to stop her from worrying, "I just thought I'd call. The boys are still sleeping," and then quickly add, "as in, Axel and his dog. His dog loves me, by the way. I think we're going to be best friends so even if Axel starts to annoy me, I'll have to stay here with Luci."

Mom chuckles lazily, and I hear her sip at something, probably her morning coffee. "Is Axel already starting to annoy you?" she asks then, concerned.

I sigh. "No, and I don't think he will." There's silence for a few moments, until I say, "Mommy, you have no idea how glad I am that I'm here. Like, I'm so happy."

I can almost see her smile through the phone. Mom says, "and I am so happy to hear that. What's happening with you two then? If people ask me who this Axel is that my daughter ran off with, what do I call him? Your boyfriend?"

I chuckle. "Nobody is gonna ask you that," I say, still liking the sound of Axel being my boyfriend again. "But no, we're not there yet. We're starting over. We went on a date last night and it was, for the most part," I say, not telling her about Axel asking me about who I've fucked since him, "really, really nice."

"That's lovely, Avi," Mom says.

"And if anyone asks where I've run off to," I chuckle, and say, "you can a) tell them it's none of their damn business, or b) tell them I was interested in changing programs and going to a new school, and I already have a friend in Seattle, who is letting me room with him. I prefer option a."

Mom giggles. "Right, your roommate. Wait, are you guys staying in the same room?"

"Nah, I've got the couch."

"Do you think you'll move into his bed, or get your own?"

"I don't know what I think," I answer, and say honestly, "but I know what I want. So, I'm staying on the couch for now. We're actually going shopping at 9 for some decor and furniture because his apartment is so empty and lifeless," I tell her, and gasp, "he doesn't even have a dinner table or a toaster or pots!"

Mom chuckles. "He's hardly been there, so give him a break. Make sure to get stuff on sale though, and when it comes to keeping the house tidy and clean, make sure you're not the only one doing the chores because you don't have a job or something. You're not his maid."

I laugh. I love my mom. "I haven't been here long, but trust me, Axel isn't going to be like that. Oh, and I am looking into school. I'll get a job too, if it's necessary."
