28 | the truth comes out

But mostly, he realizes what he has done. And he's scared.

Axel and Will aren't talking when Jem and I wake up and find them having a coffee in the living room, both on their phones. Obviously it isn't that unusual, but there seems to be some tension, and I can't even begin to imagine what it could be about.

Luckily, Jem and Luci liven the place up by pouncing around and screeching and woofing.

I ruffle my brother's hair, mumbling "good morning", and take a seat on Axel's lap, smooching his lips. "Morning," I whisper against his face, and he murmurs it back, holding me in his arms.

I think both Jem and Luci get a little jealous because Jem sees and immediately comes over to us and crawls onto the couch, snuggling into Axel's side. Luci follows her and jumps on top of me, trying to curl his bog body onto my small lap too, nudging his head against my hand for me to stroke him.

We all laugh, even Will, who seems exhausted. I'm not sure where he was last night, or when he got back. But something's up, probably with Sam again. I don't ask him though. He'll tell me when he's ready.

"Do you guys wanna do anything before I have to work?"

Will shrugs. Jem lays her head against Axel and doesn't say a word.

"We could do some shopping?" Axel says. "We need a better kitchen table."

I nod.

Will does too. "Sounds like a plan."

・・・

I love books, but working at a bookstore can be really tiring. Technically, working anywhere for 8 hours can be quite tiring. I'm not in the mood to walk home, so I call Axel after my shift to come pick me up in his car. He agrees, obviously. I'm not that far, and he's been with crazy little Jem and Luci all afternoon, and Will, who probably hasn't said much still.

He's leaning against his car when I walk outside, hands in his pockets, keeping them out of the cold.

Axel smiles cheekily when he sees me, and I forget all about my shift, and scurry toward him, jumping into his arms. He chuckles lightheartedly, catching me, and kisses my neck with his warm lips, burrowing his face into my shoulder.

"How was work?" he asks.

"Bleh," I grumble, "I can't wait to go home."

He kisses my lips. "Okay, get in," he says, and opens the door. He goes around to his side and adds, "I gotta pick up my pay stub real quick if you don't mind."

I don't say a word, and we drive across the street to the gym, and I stay silent as Axel stops the car.

"Wanna come in?" he asks.
