26 | don't freak out
"Axel said you had a surprise?"
"Hi," I whisper, creeping around the door to the washroom, where Will stands, gelling his hair.
He pulls me in with his greasy hands and jumps up and down, "happy birthday, little sister!"
"What did you get me?"
He scoffs. "You're not even going to wish me a happy birthday?"
My jaw drops and sarcastically, I gasp, "it's your birthday too?"
He grunts, "wow, can't believe you forgot."
I laugh and ruffle his hair, messing it up. "Happy birthday. How's adulthood?"
"Hmm," he scratches his shaved chin, "Can't tell yet. Too early. Gonna buy a lottery ticket. Hopefully that goes well. What about you?"
I shrug. "It'll be better once I get your surprise over with?"
"What surprise?"
"Axel said you had a surprise?"
"Did he now?"
I nod, giggling. "Oh, yeah," I slap his shoulder, saying, "you can't trust that kid, can you? Now where's my surprise? You know I hate surprises. Can you just give it to me now?"
He sighs, "It's not that simple." When I stare at him with puppy dog eyes, he asks, "you want it right now?" I nod, and he gives in, "fine, but you're gonna have to wear this," he says, going into the top drawer and pulling out a bandana. He sees the confused look on my face and grins, "over you eyes, silly. It's a surprise. No peeking." He pushes me out of the washroom and says, "I'll be down in two seconds, okay?" and closes the door in my face.
I knock at it again, and he peeks out. "Want your surprise? Leave."
"No, for real, Will," I smile a little, "did you see Grandma?"
He chuckles. "Dad's freaking out."
I nod. "Why do you think she's here?"
He thinks. "I don't know, but she hasn't said anything about grandpa. And why didn't he come with her?"
I suck air in through my teeth. "I'm not going to try to deal with that today."
He shakes his head. "No kidding. Now go get ready so I can take you to your surprise."
I giggle and rush back to my room, feeling a little bit anxious. Surprises scare me, I'm sorry. They just do. I like to know what's going on 100 percent of the time. But unfortunately, Will is adamant about not telling me. I could see it on his face. So I go to my room, pull on a black lacy tank top and a pair of ripped jean shorts, even though Mama won't approve when she sees me, and go downstairs to wash my face and layer on sunscreen.
