After half an hour alone walking along the beach shore I made my way inside again. It was all quiet inside the house until a shout broke the silence.
"Kay!" I heard Mia shout, scaring the hell out of me.
I ran over to her room to find her sitting up with a panicked look on her face. She would look down at the bed then back up at me, fueling my and dead set fear.
"Mia, what's wrong?" I asked, slightly panicking myself.
"Kay, my water just broke." she whispered.
"What?" I asked, shocked to the core.
"My water just broke!" she repeated.
I took a few calming breaths, well I tried to anyway, while Mia freaked out. Someone has to remain as calm as possible right now and it's obvious that it won't be Mimi. She was almost hyperventilating while I tried to remember the few things I read in the baby books that she made me read.
"Mia! Honey, I need you to breathe and try, just try to settle your nerves. Getting all over emotional and nervous right now isn't good for the baby or you. I know it's tough but I need you to try to calm down." I told her.
"Right, Kay what if I suck at being a mom?"
"You won't suck, this baby is lucky to have you as a mom. Fear is normal because this is brand new and everything is going to change now but you've got this. I've all the confidence in the world in you."
"I'm scared, what if . . . oh that was intense." she groaned, bending over slightly.
"Contractions? Ok Mia, we've got to get you to the nuns." I said, with panic rearing its ugly head again.
Taking things calmly I ushered Mia to the bathroom, she changed her clothes while I grabbed her hospital bag and tried to call Brian. When she came out of the bathroom she looked calmer but I could still see the nerves and the sheen of panic.
Mia asked me for a minute to herself so I grabbed the bag and brought it out to her car. I grabbed my cell while I was waiting and tried again.
"Hey Kay, what's up? Mia craving sweets again?" Brian asked, chuckling.
"Buster you're gonna be a daddy, very soon." I told him.
"Wait, what?"
"Her water broke, we're leaving now." I told him as Mia waddled her way out of the house.
"Is she ok?" he asked and I could hear the engine revving.
"Mia's a trooper and a warrior man, meet us there." I said before hanging up.
"Was that Brian?"
"Yeah, he'll meet us there. Come on Mommy."
My own nerves were threatening to break free but I needed to keep calm for Mia's sake or at least pretend that panic isn't squeezing me by the throat. I drove quickly but safely with Mia contracting next to me. As soon as the nuns heard the car pull up a few of them came out.
"Ya rompió fuente, no se como están las contracciones." I told the nuns.
I accompanied them to the birthing room where they had Mia get comfortable. She was sweating already and there was a sheen of determination in her eyes. Twenty minutes later I heard the cars pulling in so I pried her fingers out of the death grip they had on my hand and made my way outside. One of the nuns was rushing a frantic Brian inside.
"No se preocupe, no se preocupe, ya me ocupo yo." I told her.
"How is she? Did I miss anything?" he asked nervously.
