Chapter 18 - Plan B

Kaneki's POV:

(Y/N) quickly looked back at me and Ayato as we all nodded and quickly hid in the shadows. Once it was clear we quickly snuck off and ran down the streets. Once we had distanced ourselves a bit from the CCG and Cochlea, we stopped running to catch our breaths. Ayato leaned his back against a wall as he looked slightly over at (Y/N). She had bent forward as she stood with her hands on her knees, panting slightly. I walked over to her and took one of her hands in mine, making her stand up again and look at me.

"I told you to stay home, where you're safe." I began as I unintentionally narrowed my brows at her. She slowly looked away from me again as she bit her lip slightly, "Listen, I know you came to warn us, but that's no excuse for bringing your own life in danger! You could have gotten seriously hurt!" I said in a slightly louder voice as she pulled her hand away from me. 

"But I'm not and of course I would come if I knew that you were in danger! You're not the only who's willing to risk their life for someone! If... If it were for you, I wouldn't hesitate!" (Y/N) said as she looked back up at me. 

"No! I won't let you do that! I'll... I'll protect you, but I can't protect you if I don't know where you are and if you're not following our rules! I... I won't, no, I can't lose you!" I was almost yelling now as she widened her eyes a bit.

"Kaneki you didn't lose me! I kept away from danger as much as possible and I managed to get both you and Ayato out of there in time!" She yelled back as she turned back to me. I just looked at her for a moment, that's not true... 

"Not true," I began as she turned back around and shot me a questioning look, "you were in danger tonight... I don't know precisely what happened, but I could see it in your eyes when I regained consciousness. What did I do while I was... 'away'?" I looked her up and down slightly again, checking again to make sure that I haven't hurt her. (Y/N) just looked at me for a moment as she then looked over at Ayato. I followed her gaze to see Ayato quietly observing us. 

"She risked her life tonight, for you, Eyepatch. If she hadn't come we both know that none of us would have made it out alive." Ayato said as he kept leaning against the wall, "You didn't do anything to HER, because she was able to protect herself with that thing." Ayato looked at the suitcase in (Y/N) hand as I quickly looked at it as well. 

"So I tried to kill her as well?!" I questioned as I looked at (Y/N) for confirmation which she just gave a slight nod to.

"But it's okay, I know how to handle you when you cross, you've done three times now. I've just never seen you... Like that... What happened?" (Y/N) looked at me with worried eyes as she reached out and took hold of my hand. I gave her hand a slight squeeze as I just looked down at it. 

"Yeah, I'd like to know that too." Ayato spat as he walked awway from the wall and stood a little bit behind (Y/N). I just looked at them, I don't even remember... 

"... I'm weak." I just muttered as (Y/N) quickly shook her head and jumped forward to embrace me. My arms wouldn't move as they just decided to hang lifelessly and I looked down at (Y/N). She was hugging me tightly as she was hiding her face in my chest.

"No, you're not! You're strong. I saw how you easily defeated Ayato tonight, you didn't even try!" She said as she sounded somewhat proud and laughed a bit to herself.

"Hey!!" Ayato yelled in embarrassment behind her as he threw a small rock after us. I quickly caught it before it could hit (Y/N) as I laughed a bit too and looked at Ayato with a mocking look. "It's not funny!" He yelled as he turned around and walked a few feet away from us. 

"Just please, don't do something like this again. My heart can't take the pressure." I said as I smiled down at her. She just giggled a bit as she looked up at me and nodded.
