(Shannon's POV)
I kept wondering what type of accident Missi had sustained. She didn't appear to have any noticeable physical impairment that might keep her from writing. It eventually dawned on me that she might have been affected mentally instead and would explain why she hadn't recognized me. I called Jared to see what his thoughts were.
'You're home already?' He asked.
'I've been delayed, and you'll never guess why.' I said before revealing what happened.
'Are you sure it's her?'
'Yeah'
'Maybe she did recognize you but didn't want to let on. Maybe she's involved with him. She left you Shannon and finding her doesn't mean she's happy to see you again.'
'I can't accept that Jay. Something's missing.' I said.
He came around once I added my speculation as to the possible effect of the accident.
'I know you won't be satisfied until you know more. Even though I don't necessarily agree, give me the info and I'll have someone do a little digging.'
After everything Missi and I'd shared I needed her to acknowledge me at the very least. I settled in for the night, but the vision of her face wouldn't let me rest. I'd wanted to call her out after she appeared unaffected, but now all I wanted was to hold her.
Morning came and standing alone under a steamy spray brought back memories of a ritual Missi and I had. Very rarely had we showered separately and cleanliness wasn't always the main objective. The vivid recollection of the impassioned sounds she made and the hot water running down my body enhanced those memories. I closed my eyes and started stroking myself. I was briefly interrupted when I realized my phone was ringing but answering was the last thing on my mind until my fantasy was complete.
Jared had been the one calling, so I called him back.
'Melanie Mathews is Missi's name now. She lived in Santa Cruz before moving there six months ago. One car is registered to her and the other belongs to the waitress, Brittany Colwell. The man next door is Michael Grayson and he's a neurosurgeon. So, what are your plans now?' He asked.
'I'm not sure.'
'Just don't get picked up for stalking.'
'I doubt that will happen.'
'What did you tell Jeanie?'
'I told her the truth and she left. I feel really bad, but I have to see this through.'
'I hope she isn't pissed off enough to put some crap on the internet about this. Surely you didn't tell her anything that would reveal Missi's identity.'
'All she knows is that Melanie is Melissa and we were involved before she and I started seeing each other.'
'Good.'
'Maybe I'll go back to the restaurant and make friends with Brittany.'
'Use your charm.'
'But of course.' I said and we both chuckled.
'Be mindful Shannon. Bad press wouldn't be good for the band.'
'I get it Jay.' I said, trying to quell his incessant anxiety about paparazzi.
I went back to Missi's, but parked at a condo development close by instead of near her house in an effort to appear less like a stalker. It wouldn't have mattered anyway since no one was outside either time I walked by. I was returning to the car when I noticed a sign indicating the condos were for rent. The proximity to Missi was ideal, so after renting one I set up camp on the deck. I was reading when a familiar voice drifted up from the beach.
