(Missi's POV)
I was coherent enough to imagine shapes and objects in the speckled ceiling tiles, but I felt like I was dreaming. The bright lights overhead were suddenly overshadowed when a woman started hovering over me, her voice sounding like a muffled synthesizer.
A man wearing scrubs appeared next. His voice was more discernible, but I couldn't piece anything together that made sense. He and the woman spoke briefly before I started moving. I raised my head and suddenly realized I was being wheeled down the corridor of a hospital. Once I was settled in my room the man started describing something so perverse that I cringed. I couldn't imagine why he'd be telling me such a horrifying thing until I slowly started comprehending that this atrocity had happened to me. A shrill alarm started beeping, but it was no match for my screams.
(Shannon's POV)
A big black dog caught my attention at the animal shelter. Her name was Maggie and she was a Labrador mix. She took to me right away and it wasn't long before we were on our way home. Jared and Brittany went for dogfood and returned with toys and treats as well. Maggie loved the attention and had a very hearty appetite. Although she'd settled in quite well, that night she didn't want to sleep in her new doggie bed. Even though I knew it was a mistake, I let her sleep with me and she seemed as content as I was having somebody near. Over the next few days my mood improved. Whenever I was down Maggie was my constant companion and lavished her affection on me.
Maggie and I were getting ready to go to the dog park one day when my phone rang. I recognized the caller's voice immediately as Missi's dear friend Chelsea.
'I hope it's okay I'm calling. I kept your number in case Missi wanted to contact you at some point. She'd like to see you.' She said.
'That's great! Where is she?' I asked excitedly.
'In a facility not far from here. I'm so grateful to you Shannon for helping her out of that situation with Michael.'
'There was no way I was leaving her there.'
'I only met him once and I didn't like him. Gradually I didn't hear from her and when I tried calling, her number was out of service. I wish I'd known the extent of the situation or I would have tried harder to contact her.'
'No worries. How's she doing?' I asked eagerly.
'Not very well. They're trying medication, hoping to pull her out of her depression. I think maybe it's making her worse instead of better though. She's pretty out of it.'
'I figured she'd been pushed over the edge when she found out what happened. I'd love to nail that son of a bitch. I've struggled with not going after him.'
'But that wouldn't be in her best interest.'
'That's the only reason I haven't. Tell me how to get in touch with her. I want to see her as soon as possible.' I said, and she gave me the information.
I was happy to see the facility where Missi was located was near the ocean, but I was shocked when I saw her. She was pale and lifeless.
'Hey princess.' I said quietly so as not to startle her.
'Hi Shannon.' She said attempting to smile.
'I've been really worried about you.'
'I figured that and thought I should let you know what's going on.'
'Well yeah. What would make you think I wouldn't want to know?'
'I think it's best if you move on Shannon.'
