I blinked repeatedly trying to focus my eyesight on the face in front of me. I didn't recognize it. Did I? I shut my eyes at the brightness of the room and tried to steady my breathing. I heard the steady beep of a monitor and I tried to control myself, fear overwhelming my body.
"Natasha?" An unfamiliar voice spoke and I felt a hand squeeze mine. My eyes fluttered open to a boy on my right, standing over me. His perfect brown eyes glistening down on me. His right hand moved to my cheek and he let out a sigh of relief. "You're awake." He breathed and I became confused. I sat up quick and he took a step back. I looked around the room in a panic and ran a hand through my brown curls. A hospital bed? A hospital? How did I get here? He noticed my fear and sat in the chair beside me. "You are OK. The doctor said you are fine." He gestured tward my IV. "They put medication in here and re hydrated you." A hospital? I can't be in a hospital? I gripped my throbbing stomach. Then it hit me. Everything that happened came flooding back.
****6 Hours Earlier****
I ran out of the house, tears streaming down my face.
"GET BACK HERE!" I heard Dad call but I ignored it. I ran as fast as I could. Town. The safest place. I felt like he was chasing me. I couldn't look back. He would kill me. I kept running. It was late and darkness filled the sky. The only light was shinning down on me from the crooked street lamps. I made it to town in record time. I turned into an alley. Loads of screaming girls were in front of the plaza and I knew there had to be a concert. There always was. I didn't care I just knew he wouldn't find me in here. I plastered my back to a wall panting for breath. I slid down it hugging my ripped jean covered knees to my chest. I buried my face in my hands and focased on my breathing.
I don't know how long I sat there. Hours maybe. The screaming had died down. I just tapped my index finger to my knee. I focused on the tapping. It calmed me. It kept me sane.
I felt sick. Dizzy. I just continued to tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
"Hello?" I heard footsteps come toward me. "Are you alright?" I heard a voice speak. I heard more footsteps.
"Liam! Come on we have to go!" I heard another voice speak. My head pounded.
"I'm not leaving her here, Zayn! She's obviously not alright!" I heard more footsteps. I felt like the world was spinning. Tap. Tap. Tap.
"Excuse me?" I heard him crouch down beside me. "Are you alright?" I slowly peered up. He was looking at me with intense, caring eyes. I felt mine droop the dizziness getting more predominant. I swallowed and tried to breath. Tap. Tap. "Can you stand?" He held out his hand and I took it. I normally wouldn't have... but there was something about him. I was in so much pain. Why? Everything hurt. I felt dizzy again. I stood and I heard Liam gasp. I gripped my head and looked down.
Blood had stained my plain white v-neck and was all over me. I felt my shaking hand let go of Liam's and reach down to my shirt. I was stabbed? Cut? He cut me? Tap. Tap. Then things started to get blurry. I looked around and heard voices yelling. I lost my balance and I began to fall. I expected to hit something hard but instead I found myself surrounded by strong arms.
"It's fine I am going to help you. I am going to get you help." Liam placed his hand on my cheek and slowly ran his thumb over my cheek. "Stay with me." He whispered. "Please. Talk to me. What's your name? Can you tell me your name."
I breathed and I didn't have enough energy. I felt my eyes shut and I breathed out what I could before my body was consumed in darkness.
"Natasha." I said so quietly I couldn't hear myself. I then fell into a sea of darkness surrounded by nothing but the soft sound of Liam's voice until the noise ended and I was alone. Drifting. Tap. Tap.
*******
"Liam?" I whispered and I stared straight ahead. Watching out of the corner of my eye he let a weak smile slip onto his face.
"You remember?" He said and I turned toward him. I squeezed my eyes shut, shaking my head as the tears seeped down my cheeks. The corners of my mouth were being torn down word and I heard him sit on the bed beside me. Liam pulled me into a hug and I collapsed into his chest.
"It's fine. I am here. I will never let anything hurt you any more." He whispered and I tried to steady my breathing. Tap. Tap.
We heard a knock on the door and we both pulled back.
"Miss Natasha?" A nurse said with a welcoming smile. I nodded cautiously as Liam reached over and dried a tear on my cheek. She walked over and slowly helped me lay on my back pulling my sheet up. I was in a hospital dress and she slowly lifted it revealing the bandages running up the left side of my abdomen and I knew Liam noticed my fear because he grabbed my hand giving it a swift squeeze and I swallowed hard. The nurse slowly took off the bandages and I saw the stitches running up my side. I clenched my jaw. She put new bandages on and then stood back to look at me.
"Are you in any pain?" She asked and I sat there for a minuet, thinking.
"It's OK Natasha." Liam said reassuringly. "Go on."
I slowly shook my head. I wasn't.
"You got very lucky Miss. Natasha. The cut wasn't very deep. You will be healed in a few weeks." She said looking down at her hands before looking back up to steady my expression again. "Now we need to discuss this although I know it may be difficult." I swallowed hard and I felt Liam sit back next to me. I needed him here. For some reason he made me feel safe.
"Lets start with your name." She said and I looked down.
"Natasha Devine." I looked down, shaking my head once again feeling close to tears. "Don't send me back there. Please. Please." It was the first time I had ever said anything relating to home to someone of authority. Liam pulled me into him and I looked up at the nurse as she spoke.
"Natasha, we can help you. But you need to tell me everything." I nodded feeling a lump form in my throat.
"She will." Liam said, his voice smooth. "Can I just have a few minuets with her please." The nurse nodded leaving the room and I took a deep breath turning to look at the man who had saved my life. His hair was brown and lay with perfect messiness on his head. His face was pristine and his expression was genuine. His strong arms lay at his side currently as his brown eyes peered into my eyes, piercing all the way into my soul.
"Liam." I said as it finally hit me. "Liam Payne." He nodded and I looked down immediately feeling a slight embarrassed by myself. "From One Direction."
"You saved my life." I said not knowing how else to put it. "Thank you so...so." I said my voice breaking and he pulled me into a hug.
"I am so glad you are going to be OK." Liam said and I could hear the upset in his voice. "I was so worried about you." Why?
"You... were worried... about me?" I said hoarsely and i felt his chest move in and out with his breathing.
"Yes! So worried. Now," He said pulling back and slowly, with a gentle touch, lifted my chin to looking straight into my eyes. "I need you to tell me everything. I never want to see you hurt...ever... again." I nodded, falling back into his strong chest and I just sat there. Please don't let me go. Never.
