XV. Dazed and Confused

DONNY

Donny never knew what hit him.

One minute, he was having a pleasant conversation with his parents about their recent merger plans and the next a heated discussion about his un-willingness in not accepting any of their proposals of suitable girlfriends.

His father shook his head in resignation, Donny has always been stubborn at that. The irony is that it is also his stubbornness, that family trait, is what led their company to what it is now in the first place.

The family company in question, was a business founded in Hotel Management. His mother had a passion of interior design and architecture while growing up that led them into creating their own family business that is small branches of hostels which eventually developed into a small-scale company that gained public attention through the years. And now, there they are.

The company which started small that now is so successful, they can’t keep track of their own mergers and acquisitions. They keep buying stocks of other hotel businesses from left to right.

That was the golden time of their family business under the boardmanship and rule of his father and now Donny’s, in turn.

Donny was now CEO of the company for almost two years, after receiving the key to his vast office from his father upon his retirement.

At 27, Donny was at the peak of his career, and the world at the palm of his hands.

He doesn’t need a freaking love life to have someone to share all of this with. He wants it all and he wants it all by himself.

His parent’s doesn’t share the same idea, but he’s the one moving the chest pieces now. He will not be perturbed.

But that doesn’t stop his mother from pestering him to marry or get a girlfriend. His eldest sister had already married. Hannah, the younger sibling next to him, had already got herself a fiancé. And he is definitely more than happy for both of them but his parents are convinced that he needs to find ‘the One’ while he is still young or he will eventually regret it.

So far, Donny’s not regretting being single all his life. He’d rather be single than have some girl leech off of him. No way.

So he pretends to acknowledge his mother whenever she visits, bringing with her names of the daughters of their neighbors and family friends hoping that one of them might catch his attention. Again, no way.

And this time, Donny is not having any of it. His current reasons being that he doesn’t need an arm-candy aka a girlfriend to show-off on events. His face is pretty enough to show-off himself.

He saw her mother smile at his kind of jokes and moved to more important topics to be discussed.

“So back to what I was talking about earlier Dad. I’m going to be needing to fly early tomorrow to preside over the business merge at Masbate. Do you both want to come over?”

“Oh, sweetie. We’d love to go but I have a few meetings with my friends to attend to and your dad is going fishing with your brother this week. We always miss spending time with you. When will you take a break?”

His dad watched amusedly by the sidelines, “He doesn’t like taking breaks, Maricel. But maybe when he finds the girl of his dreams-”

Donny groaned from his seat. His father likes making his life miserable by being sarcastic.

But before his mom could even say another girl’s name to match with him, he’s already standing away from his seat and marching out his door.

He kissed his mom along the way, “I know mom. I need to find the one. But can we just save another lecture about it when I get back? I need to take care of my stuff for tomorrow.”
