Chapter 8 - Welcome back

Rose's POV

The Dimitri that stood in front of me, had stubble on his face. His clothes seemed like they were old, all crumpled up. He resembled a lost puppy, with no where to go to.

"What the hell happened to you comrade?" I asked him, and realised my voice sounded husky and dry.

His face showed confusion for just a second, but as soon as he looked at me he gave me one of those smiles. The smile that Dimitri reserved only for me, and right there and then I melted to my core.

"Oh Roza, my Roza you're finally awake. I was so worried about you."

He come closer to me and hugged me very gently. I looked around my surroundings and realised why he was being so gentle with me. I was in a hospital bed, hooked to a couple of beeping machines. As I tried to hug him back I realised that my arms ached slightly. They had needles in them, I winced a little at the sight. Needles really weren't my thing.

" What the hell happend the last thing I remember was the stragoi attack. The stragoi! Is Lissa ok? What about the twins and Christian?" I asked as worry spread through me.

" Yes they are all safe, they will be even better now that you're awake. The twins didn't want to leave your side. We had a hard time to get them home, they only agreed because I said I would not leave your side. That seemed to calm them down."

I wanted him to answer the rest of the questions swimming in my mind, but the nurse come in. She was tall, blonde and had pretty green eyes.

"I'm glad you're back with us guardian Hathaway. How are you feeling?" she asked as she checked my vitals.

"I could be worse. But my head and abdomen really hurt, and I'm starving."

"Ok you're vitals look good. I'll get you some pain killers and food. I will also inform the queen that you're up we have strict instructions to let her know straight away. The doctor should be with you in an hour or so to see how you're doing. Anything else?"

"No that's all thank you."

She smiled at me and I managed to smile back. She seemed nice, but I guess that being the Queen's guardian and best friend everyone wanted to be nice to me, sometimes to get in Lissa's good books. But I had learnt how to deal with that. Plus I was sure Lissa had laid down firm rules to the hospital staff which would make them more attentive to me. I could just imagine it. I felt a smile creep to my face. Lissa had become a great Queen the best the vampire world had seen.

The nurse checked the vitals one more time and left. I immediately turned my attention back to Dimitri.

"So what happened comrade, what's going on?"

"Well after that stragoi hit you, I got you back to the hospital as quick as my legs could carry us. I've never ever ran as fast in my life. It turns out the pin Lissa gave you saved you. It healed most of the injury even with the knife in place. However once they took the knife, it tore you're abdomen again. They rushed you into surgery. I was so worried, that I should've taken the knife out. But the doctors said that if I had taken it the pin didn't have enough spirit to save you and you would've bled to... " He trailed off, I grabbed his hand and squeezed it in encouragement for him to continue. It seemed to work as he took a deep breath and went on.

"You've been out for the past 5 days. Oh Roza I was so worried, I should've protected you better. I love you so much Roza, the past 5 days seemed like hell on earth without you, it was like a never ending nightmare. I'm so glad you're awake." He finished his voice fill of regret, sadness, relief and joy all at the same time.

Jeez! I had been out for 5 days and all because of a knife.

" Dont blame yourself. You did protect me, you brought me back here and saved me."

I pulled him towards me and crashed my lips to his before he could say another word.

Then suddenly I could hear them. I tore away from Dimitri, and looked up just as Lissa, Christian and the twins come through the door. Relief and happiness all over their faces.

I was glad I had done my job.

My family was safe, any wound was worth that, and I would do anything for them.

I would always keep them safe no matter what.
