42. a queen

She braided her knee length hair to somewhat make it manageable and pleasing to look at. She placed her armors on the places where they should be: on her chest, her extremeties, her back. The clang of steel satisfied her senses, her morning routine out and about.

She dashed forth her chamber's door and proceeded to the monkey king's waiting room. It was but another day for Karrie, to linger, to feed her heart with longings even intense want and need couldn't satisfy.

Sun marched out of the double door that led to his sleeping chambers and gave a smile to the first person he landed his eyes on.

Karrie was Sun's view every morning since time immemorial. The woman served him as his commander general--Karrie leading his kingdom through perilous wars against demons and orcs.

He was thankful for her service to the kingdom. He wanted so badly to express his gratitude to Karrie but he thought that his way of showing his gratitude would be too much for the kingdom to handle.

He wanted Karrie to be his queen. But he couldn't just do that. He is a king after all, he should be noble and his decisions must be based on careful criticism and logical ways; not based on feelings and dictates of the heart.

Kings shouldn't think and act that way. His position in the kingdom blocked him to express his feelings freely. He was meant to rule and be precise; he should show no sign of weakness. And he thinks that making Karrie as his partner would jeopardize the integrity of the crown and the kingdom.

Karrie isn't a native-born of the kingdom Kong. She was just a warrior who found its way to the kingdom after a rigorous war in her home and due to her skills, the monkey king trusted her, let alone, made her the commander general.

If Sun made Karrie her queen, the people of Kong might think that any outsider who enters the kingdom can acquire such a great opportunity to be in the throne; as if being a royal is a joke, as if its a position that's to be treated so lightly.

Sun took a deep breath and ordered for Karrie to come closer to him.

"Rally the people of the kingdom to the field tonight. I will be announcing news that's great of a deal." He said to his commander general, dismissing her instantaneously.

At around seven in the evening, Sun appeared in front of his people, just as he mentioned to Karrie.

Karrie was right beside him.

"People of Kong, it has been a while since our kingdom has fallen into war, and by that we should fling our gratitude to our noble soldiers who protected us no matter the cost.

Our kingdom has enjoyed peace, freedom and order, over the years that came and went. But I noticed, we may be safe, but our kingdom seems to lack something.

The kingdom is missing a very important persona that could amplify the freedom and joy that we ever so subtly relish upon..

Our kingdom is missing its Queen."

The people of Kong fell into whispers and gossip as soon as the monkey king finished his statement. People were confused and were also itching for the plans that the king might take upon after the convocation.

Every word that Sun uttered were daggers to his chest. He was failing his feelings, his heart's desire, but it was the right thing to do for the kingdom. Taking a breath, he went on.

"After my mother, Khang Lin, the very first queen of Kong, died, the kingdom was ruled by my father single-handedly until it was my turn to lead.

I believe that this kingdom, just like before, needs a voice for its women, a gentle hand that could reach out to them. A motherly ruler that could tend to the needs of her young.

So, I ask, to whomever may fit the criteria that will be announced shortly after my agenda, one of a few can become Kong's queen.

But I must warn you, those who have ill intentions to the throne will be disposed instantly, for my dopplegangers tolerate no dark thought, they will decide and choose for me.

I, the king, thanks you all for hearing my subtle plea . Good night, my people." Sun finished, turning his back to the people and traipsing back to his quarters.

Before retreating to his chambers, he gently gave to Karrie the scroll that contained the criteria for the soon-to-be-queen.

Karrie received the scroll and bowed to the king.

Her hands were shaking. The impact of Sun's recent notions jarred her soul up to the its roots. She never expected that this day would come. When Sun wanted a queen.

In the silence of Karrie's heart, she knew she can never be Sun's queen. She just knew.

With despair and heartache ruling her thoughts, she unveiled the contents of the scroll and announced it to the people of Kong.
