Tears streaming down his face, Alexander ran to Lafayette's apartment. He rapidly knocked on the door, hoping his friend was home.

Lafayette opened the door, concern immediately appearing on his face. He motioned for Alexander to go inside, and he closed the door after he was inside.

"Alexander, mon ami, what is wrong?" Lafayette put his hands on Alexander's shoulders.

"John, he--there's something wrong with him, Laf. I don't know what's going on." His voice broke.

"What do you mean, something's wrong with him?" Mulligan walked in the room, hearing the conversation.

Alexander cleared his throat and wiped the tears from his face. "He isn't acting like himself. Ever since he got back from South Carolina, he has been distant and...angry." He looked down.

Mulligan walked up to Alexander and placed a hand on his back, comforting him.

"Why would John be angry? He usually isn't." Lafayette asked, getting Alexander a drink of water.

Alexander shrugged and told his friends about his and John's conversation. Lafayette told him he would talk to John later about it.

"I don't know if you should. I have a bad feeling about this, Laf." Mulligan said.

"Mon ami, it will be fine." Lafayette waved off Mulligan's concern. "You can go with me, or, you can stay here and comfort Alexander."

Alexander looked up at the taller man with a desperate look that said 'I don't want to be alone', and Mulligan shook his head. "I'll stay with Ham. Just--be careful, Laf."

Lafayette winked at Mulligan, making him look down. Mulligan cleared his throat and led Alexander to the couch to sit down and drink his water.

He tossed Lafayette's keys to him and the two watched as he confidently walked out the door. Mulligan whispered something, but Alexander couldn't make out what he said.

A car's engine roared to life, signaling that Lafayette was leaving. Alexander sighed, hoping Lafayette would be able to talk to John with more confidence than he himself had.
