"Mr. Jefferson as well! What a pleasant surprise." Samuel said happily.
"Yeah, yeah, Seabury. Now can we get on with this?" Jefferson asked, still holding John-- who was still struggling to get free-- down on the concrete.
Samuel cleared his throat and looked at Lafayette. "Could you help Mr. Jefferson hold Mr. Laurens up, Mr--sorry, what is your name?"
"Je m'appel Lafayette." He said, gesturing to himself then going over to help Thomas. At that moment he noticed John's mouth was being covered by Thomas' hand.
Lafayette whispered something inaudible to John then lifted up his head. Looking into John's eyes, he still saw the hopefulness John usually had in his eyes pulse, as if trying to overcome the creature inside him. Lafayette nodded at Thomas and they both lifted John up, one arm being held by each man on either side.
Alexander sighed with relief that the two men's strength together was enough to fight against whatever had taken over his John, although he couldn't help but feel useless with the lack of strength he had. He shook his head and pushed the thought from his head.
Samuel opened his bible and began to read from it, making John begin to groan, louder and louder as Samuel continued to read.
Minutes passed, and Alexander got more impatient with the Priest. "Is there a faster way of doing this? It doesn't seem to be doing much."
Samuel stopped reading and looked at Alexander, who was impatiently waiting. He closed his bible and cleared his throat once more. "And what do you suppose I do?"
Alexander steps back, slightly shocked at the sudden sass coming from Samuel. Alexander is the one apart from Thomas who is usually sassy.
"From what I can see, it looks like Mr. Laurens is possessed, possibly by a demon. Luckily, I know Latin." Samuel said proudly. He straightened his back and began to speak in Latin.
John resisted, squirming and pulling, trying to free himself from the men's grips. He tried kicking, which resulted in a swift kick behind the knees from Thomas, making him nearly fall to the ground. He yelled in pain, making more cracks form in Alexander's heart, making Alexander put his hand on his chest.
John's yells grew louder, and Alexander could not bear it anymore. He covered his ears with his hands. Samuel yelled the last few Latin words and John let out one final scream.
What looked like black smoke came from John's mouth and disappeared into the ground below. John's body relaxed and his head hung down, his eyes now closed. Thomas and Lafayette gently set John on the grass and Thomas rubbed his shoulder like it was hurting.
Alexander uncovered his ears and ran over to John. He sat down on the grass beside him and leaned in close, checking if he was still breathing. He lifted his head back up and looked at his chest, hoping to see it rise and fall.
He started to panic.
