--Meanwhile--

Thomas ran into Madison's apartment, out of breath and in disarray. Madison looked over at him; concerned, yet annoyed. "Where have you been?"

"J-james, I...made...a...mistake." Thomas said, gasping for air between each word.

A mistake? Madison thought to himself. "What did you do?"

Thomas sat down at the table across from Madison. "I knew there had to be a reason why Laurens suddenly decided to work with me, I just couldn't figure it out."

The two sat there for a moment, quiet, Thomas looking at Madison expectantly.

Madison motioned for him to continue. "Keep talking, don't just stop there."

"He turned into...me, but...different." Madison looked at Thomas, confused; another moment of silence.

"James, you know me, right?" Thomas asked. "The things I've done and become?"

Madison's face began to turn red as Thomas put his hand on his arm. "I...don't know..."

Thomas moved his hand off of Madison's arm and smacked the table, startling the red-faced man in front of him. "The things I've done, James! I told you what I've done, and you still stood there. You didn't run away and tell someone, which is what I pretty much expected you to do. Why??"

"B-because you're my friend, Thomas." Madison began to stutter. "A-and I...still like you." He looked down at the table while Thomas's demeanor changed.

"You like me.?" Thomas said, as a half-question. Madison wanted to hide now, after hearing Thomas's reaction. It wasn't what he was quite hoping for.

"James," Thomas started, "What I'm trying to say is that John Laurens changed. Not the way I did, however." He cleared his throat. "He...wasn't in control."

Madison looked back up at Thomas, who was messing with his nails. "What do you mean?"

Thomas sighed. "When I went to the Combahee river in NC, he was there too. But the thing is, there was a dark cloud there...like mine." He sighed. "It...talked to me...and...I attacked Laurens."

"You attacked him??" Madison said, shocked. "Why?"

"The dark cloud...is a demon. Like me, only not as strong. A long time ago, while I was in France, I was killed. But I came back to life-- technically--as this...thing known as a demon. I attacked Laurens and his body was weak enough to be taken by the other demon."

Madison processed the information. "So he was possessed, but still alive." Thomas nodded.

"At least he survived."

"That's not the point, James! Point is, I made a mistake. That mistake was agreeing to help that version of Laurens. Now I know that Hamilton has gotta be looking for me to get back at me somehow or...something--I don't know!" He put his head in his hands.

"Why did I have to become a monster?"

**A/N: I know there isn't much action in this chapter, but this one is to clear up some things and give a background to Jefferson. The next coming chapters will have more action and more of jmads. By the way, over 700 reads is crazy! I honestly didn't think it would get that popular so quickly. I plan on finishing this story then start on a different Lams fanfic that I was inspired to write. But thanks again you guys!**
