No one had noticed that Madison's cough was nearly gone; they all got distracted by John's collapse and Thomas' and Alexander's bickering. John mostly stayed quiet while they were in Room 29 of the hospital, just listening. This was not abnormal for John. Although Alexander could almost feel a difference in the air around him, he tried to blow it off as the effects from his collapse, but part of his brain refused to let him think it was simply that.

A few hours later, it was nearly 5 o'clock, and Alexander had to head out to go talk to Angelica. John argued with him to let him go, but Alexander wouldn't let him.

"So, why can't I go again?" John asked, lying down on the couch of their apartment.

"Because," Alexander responded from the kitchen, "you need to rest. I'm going to talk to Angelica and tell her everything that's happened to us--you. Mostly what happened to you." Alexander hurried around the apartment, looking for something, though he didn't know what it was.

"But I don't even know everything that happened to me."

Alexander stopped and looked at John. "I told you what happened."

"No, you explained part of it really fast, then went on a rant about Jefferson." John sat up. "I think I should go too, to find out everything that happened to me."

Alexander continued to hurry around the room, now looking for something else. "No, no, you need to stay here and rest. I'll have Lafayette come by and watch over you."

"Watch over me? I'm not a child; why do I need to be watched?" He stood up.

"I didn't mean it like that, I just want to make sure you're okay."

John walked over towards Alexander, who found his keys and was struggling to clip them to his belt. "You can do that better if I'm with you."

"I gotta go, John. I'll be back in a couple hours." Alexander kissed his cheek and spun around, rushing out the door.

You should've gone with him.

John sat down and sighed. "I tried, but he wasn't having it."

That fool. He doesn't know your true power.

"Well, neither do I, to be honest." He leaned back on the couch. "He always says it's Jefferson's fault. If I could just get the full truth from him, I'd understand finally."

Well, there are ways to do that.

"Whatever you're implying, stop it right now."

What?? You know what I'm talking about, and that little blabbermouth needs to get to the point once in a while and stop getting off track and blaming that demon for something he did or didn't do just because of their history.

John rubbed his eyes. "Yes, I know. But I won't go as far as hurting him to find out the truth."

You won't? You're not exactly free to do whatever you like. You are fully under my control, I'm simply avoiding conflict until you get the information I need.

"The information you need??" John stood up. "I'm the one this is happening to! You can't take this away from me."

Of course I can! I can take everything away from you! And I can start by getting rid of your little boyfriend when I'm through with him!

"DON'T YOU DARE!!!"

John spun around at the sound of the door closing.

"Mon ami, are you okay?"
