"WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM?!" Alexander screamed at Samuel. He lifted John onto his lap and held him. Tears began to stream down Alexander's face and a couple drops landed on John's.
Samuel stuttered. "I-I didn't do anything that would hurt him! I would never!"
Lafayette rushed back over to Alexander, who was crying and holding John close. "Mon ami, what's wrong??"
"H-he's n-not breathing!" He managed to say in between breaths, his voice cracking once again.
Lafayette attempted to pull John free from Alexander's grip, but Alexander wouldn't let go. "Alexander, let me see John."
Reluctantly, Alexander let go of John so that Lafayette could see if he could help. Lafayette listened closely for breathing, then put his ear against John's chest. He glanced up at Alexander.
Alexander immediately thought the worst and began crying harder. He collapsed completely to the ground, holding John's hand tightly in his. Samuel walked over to comfort him, but Alexander pushed him away, mumbling that it was all his fault.
"Alexander?" A familiar voice came from somewhere down the street.
Alexander looked up at the young woman walking up to them. He was relieved at who it was. Angelica, in her hospital scrubs.
Angelica saw Alexander's tomato-red, tear covered face and was immediately worried. "Alexander, what's wrong?" She walked closer to the group of people and saw John laying on the ground, not moving. She rushed to his side and listened.
"He's not breathing. I don't hear a heartbeat." Lafayette told her, giving her room to examine.
Angelica checked multiple places for a pulse, but could not find one anywhere she checked. She began doing chest compressions while everyone froze, unsure what to do.
The longer they waited, the more Alexander cried, begging for John to wake up and be himself again. What was only minutes passing felt like hours to Alexander, and every few pushes on John's chest, Angelica pressed her ear to it to try to listen to a heartbeat that might start.
She checked once more. Boom. Boom. She looked up at Alexander and smiled. His eyes widened.
"I-is he...?" Alexander's grip on John's hand loosened slightly as he noticed how hard he had been squeezing it.
Angelica nodded and relaxed. "His heart is beating again."
Alexander let go of John's hand, leaned over and squeezed Angelica in a hug. "Thank you so much Angelica Schuyler!"
Angelica chuckled and sat back. Alexander looked back down at John, wiping the tears off that fell on John's face. Alexander saw John's chest slowly rise and fall, and began to cry from happiness.
John's eyes slowly opened, Alexander's tear-covered red face above him being the first thing he sees. Seeing Alexander's brown eyes made him smile. "Alexander."
"John! Oh, thank the Lord you're okay." Alexander put his hand on John's cheek. "I thought I lost you."
"Not yet." John groaned while he sat up. He looked around at everyone that was looking at him.
To his right was Angelica, sitting down on the grass next to him with her hands in her lap. She was smiling that bright smile she always had.
Standing next to her was Lafayette, his hair falling out of its usual curly ponytail while he cussed in French and looking around.
To his left was Samuel Seabury, in his usual getup and clutching his Bible close to his chest. He looked amazed and concerned at the same time.
Finally John's eyes rested on the man in front of him. Alexander sat there looking at John, examining every detail of his freckled face.
John smiled at Alexander and looked down at his hand. He reached over and grabbed Alexander's hand and intertwined his fingers in his.
Alexander smiled.
