As Lafayette drove to John's house, he debated on what he would say when he got there.

Pedestrians crossing the street at a stop light stared as the man in the car kept talking to himself very fast, as Lafayette often did.

After a few minutes of rambling in French while driving, he arrived at John's house. He got out of his car and looked up at the windows, seeing a figure with curly hair walking past.

He thought it was John until he saw another curly-haired figure walk past, but this one had its hair back.

Lafayette muttered "Jefferson" and hesitantly walked up to the door. He knocked on the door and waited for a response.

The door opened and in front of him stood a man as tall as Lafayette, but with intensely curly hair and a bright purple--wait, no, that's definitely magenta-- suit.

"Marquis De Lafayette." Thomas said, dragging each syllable of his name. "Hi, handsome." He smiled.

Lafayette resisted the urge to hit his head against the wall. "Jefferson. Is John Laurens here?"

Thomas leaned against the doorframe. "Maybe. Why?"

"Need to talk to him. Can I go inside or not?" Lafayette sassed.

Thomas moved away from the doorway and let Lafayette inside. "He's upstairs."

They started to go up the stairs together, careful not to mess up any of John's animal figurines on the steps.

Once they made it to the top, it was clear to Lafayette that John was a big fan of turtles. Thomas walked into John's room, Lafayette close behind.

John looked up. "Why are you here?" Before Lafayette could answer, John spoke again. "Thomas why did you let him in here?"

"The Frenchman wants to talk to you about something." Thomas pushed Lafayette towards John, causing him to stumble a bit.

"If it's about that other immigrant, I don't want to talk." John said harshly.

Lafayette stared at him, confused as to why he would refer to Alexander as the 'other immigrant', when he knew John had multiple nicknames for him. Lafayette looked into John's eyes, studying them.

For a moment, he saw the kindness of the normal John Laurens, but it faded back to the cold stare when John blinked.

"Why are you staring at me? Speak!" John raised his voice.

"Mon ami, what's wrong? Why are you different?" Lafayette said in breaking English.

"Marquis what are you saying?" Thomas spoke up.

"Casse tois, Jefferson."

Thomas scoffed and looked at John. "Just give us a minute, Thomas."

Thomas rolled his eyes and walked out of the room. John cleared his throat. "Now, what do you want from me?"

Lafayette stayed quiet for a moment, translating his thoughts. "What...happened in South Carolina?"

He paused. "You know why I was there."

"Tell me why."

John stared at Lafayette, eyes flicking back and forth at his.
