“Are you Yuit?”
The question that keeps playing inside my mind. A question that led me to be misunderstood. A question that I should have answered honestly.
“W-what are you talking about, Kathy?”
“Please don’t play dumb with me, Natasha.”
“B-but I am no—“
“Stop dilly dallying and speak up! Are you Yuit or not?!” Kathy slams my desk, demanding her question to have an answer.
“Hey Kathy! That’s kind of rude isn’t it?” Alicia tries to butt in, which was answered by Kathy’s sharp glare. She looks back at me with the same glare and asks again, “Are you Yuit, Natasha?”
“I-I… I am…”
Kathy nods down, hiding her face from me.
“I see…”
“Wait… if she’s Yuit, then…” murmurs spread around the classroom like wildfire. I didn’t have time to listen to them, I wanted to know what Kathy was thinking.
“K-Kathy… I—“
“Don’t talk to me, Natasha.” With only this to say she makes her way back to her seat. Our adviser soon comes in, subsiding all the whispers spreading around. I stand there, frozen stiff from what had happened.
“Natasha, take a seat.” Miss Rachel said opening her attendance record.
What just happened back there? I didn’t have the slightest clue until later as we had our lunch break. Kathy had already dragged Alicia out of the room right after the bell rang, leaving me no openings to join them. I turn to my next best and only choice as of now: Sara.
“So she did found out huh?” I nod still disheartened about it.
“I… I am I the one wrong here? I should’ve just come clean about it and—“
“No you’re not. You had your reasons about hiding the fact that you are Yuit. If everyone else knew, well… that’s what you were trying to avoid.”
“I just… didn’t want my other self to be involved in this friendship. Just this once.” Sara places her hand on my head, “There, there.”
“Hey, there’s still friends waiting for you waiting on the other side right?” Sara spurred out, trying to help me get cheerful. The thought of Erica and Penelope made me down more, seeing that I had been avoiding them for a while; I wonder how they’re doing.
As the day continued on, I kept gazing over at Kathy most of the time thinking of the what-if’s of my actions and decisions. Class seemed to have ended that day quickly and still I was stuck with wanting to patch things up with Kathy.
Deciding to confront her before this day ended, I approached her before she could leave.
“K-Kathy. I need to talk with you…” as she looks at me with such distaste, Kathy stands up, picking up her bag and replied, “I don’t want to talk to you Natasha.”
I bowed down in front of her, saying in an apologetic tone “I’m sorry! I’m really sorry, I—“
Before I could finish, she slaps me across the face hard.
“Then why didn’t you just say so in the first place?! Why bother hiding all of that?! Why didn’t you say anything Natasha?! I don’t understand that part!”
I open my mouth but no words come out. As I look at Kathy, tears flowing down her cheeks, her face all red with frustration, there was no words for it: I had wronged Kathy’s trusting nature. Alicia was there, behind Kathy and she, too, was trying to hold back her own tears.
