Chapter 24
DENA POV
After the party, Hayes mom picked us up and asked why my hair was wet. Hayes just winked at her. I moved my eyebrows together and made a confused face. Hayes just looked at me and shrugged his shoulders. I knew he was just playing it cool and there was something he wasn't telling me.
I told Hayes mom that I could walk home and Hayes offered to walk with me. She said okay.
"What was that whole wink thing back in the car?" I asked Hayes.
"What are you talking about?" Hayes said trying to act confused. I stopped walking and stopped him with my hand.
"What do you mean, 'what are you talking about', Hayes?" I said to him squinting my eyes.
He looked down at the ground and swiped his hair to the side. "Sorry. Okay, I'm sorry. Listen, my mom knows about us, she knows about how we really like each other, she knows about the shower and the bed. She knows. Okay." Hayes said annoyed. I just wanted to run away. I wanted to runaway and make it all stop. So I did, but Hayes grabbed my arm just in time to stop me. I turned back around. He pulled me closely to his chest. "You can't always run away from your problems, Dena." He said to me, staring me strait into the eye. I stopped trying to get away.
"I'm sorry. It's just, how?" I asked teary eyed.
"We were really into each other before you got hit. I was there in fact. My mom just wants to know what happens because your parents don't really like me." He said.
"Why?" I asked him sitting down on the curb with my hands crossed.
"Because they think I could've prevented you from getting hit." Hayes said sitting down next to me and linking his hand into mine.
"But that's cr-"
"Crazy, yeah I know." Hayes interrupted.
I hugged him and we parted. When I went home, I snuck I to my room and went to bed. Tomorrow is the last day of school before spring break.
