Chapter 51

“Should we tell someone?” I asked him, he was still looking down.

“Not today, please. We need to let it die down.”  He said, playing with his set of keys.

“Okay, we don’t have to tell anyone today. But you have to promise me that we’ll tell someone this week Hayes, okay?” I asked him. I tried to look him in the eyes, but he just kept looking down at the floor. He nodded. I didn’t know I should believe him or not, but at this point, it was the only think I remembered how to do. I could feel myself getting further and further away from Hayes, and the only thing that could get me closer is trusting him. And at least this was a start.

He walked out of the shower and I finished washing myself. I got dressed and went down stairs, preparing myself for one hell of a dinner.

When I walked down, no one was talking. The only noise I could hear was dishes clinking and the sound of blank air. I walked down slowly and into the kitchen, grabbing forks and knives and setting them on the table. After all the setting up was done, everyone prepared dinner and we sat down and ate, still silent.

After dinner was finished,  I went upstairs to lie in my bed. I was tired, yet I hadn’t done anything all day. I walked into my room and curled into my covers, checking my phone and throwing up above my head. I sighed and closed my eyes, trying to go to sleep. Then, just as I was about to fall asleep, there was a knock on my door.

“Come in.” I said, sitting up strait, looking at who could be over at my door.

Hayes walked in, rubbing his eyes. I could tell he was tired. “Hey…” he said, not sure how to start the conversation.

“Hi, what’s going on?” I asked, it’s been a while since I've talked to Hayes, so many things have come up and I feel like we’re not even friends anymore.

“I need to talk to you.” He said, sitting next to me on my bed, a serious look on his face.

“Sure, what is it?” I asked him. I was seriously nervous, my hands started to sweat more and more every second the room became quieter.

“I- I feel like we’re not as close anymore.” He said, finally coming out. I nodded, taking it all it, his somewhat ‘confession’.

“Yeah…same.” I said, agreeing with his hard to say sentence.

“I think we should start over, with-without forgetting about anything that’s happened before with us.” He said, looking down, not wanting to see my response.

“I think so too. And honestly, I miss you.” I told him. Every time Hayes and I got close, something happened. Weather it was drama or someone physically hurt, we got pulled further apart from each other. We both needed someone to get through this together.

“Me too…” he said, causing a five second silence, allowing me to take this all in.

“Listen, I’m sorry that we haven’t gotten to hangout that much or talk, I don’t want us to grow apart anymore.” He said, putting his hand on mine. I flipped my hand around, grasping his, and smiled, not looking up.

“But first, lets get this whole Zach thing over with.” I said, still worried about the whole circumstance. I looked up at Hayes, he nodded in agreement and stood up. He walked to my doorframe and put his hand out, gesturing me to grab it. So I stood up and our hands met. He led me downstairs and we met up with Elisabeth in the kitchen. Cleaning the dishes.

“Mom, we need to talk.” Hayes said, I took my eyes off his mom and looked to my right at Hayes, swallowing hard and long. He was scared.
