Chapter 50!!!
When Hayes and I walked into Zach's room, we saw Zach plunging a black trash bag down his laundry shoot. We froze, we didn't know what to do. And I'm pretty sure Hayes and I suspected the worst of outcomes.
"WhAt, it's just my pukey clothes from last night." Zach said, surprised that we would've thought that. I flashed a look at Hayes. I didn't want to be there. Hayes nodded and patted Zach on the back, saying bye and walking out of the room with me. On our way downstairs, Hayes grabbed my hand I turned to him and smiled. Then, just as we were about to make it to the bottom of the steps, Hayes stood behind me, not letting me walk because he was gripping my wrist.
"What...?" I asked him, laughing nervously. Then he leaned in closer to me and lightly placed his hand on my cheek, kissing me passionately. I kissed him back. It was sort of like a wake up call, like Dena get back on top of things. I smiled and put my fingers on my lips, missing his. Then we made our way outside and hayes called his mom her coming to pick us up a couple minutes later.
After getting home, I went upstairs to my room and lied down on my bed. I slowly feel into a deep sleep. When I woke up, I realized that I probably didn’t get much sleep last night considering that I woke up four hours later.
I got out of bed and went downstairs, to see Nash, Hayes, Elisabeth and Skylynn all sitting on the couch in front of the TV. I practically stumbled down the stairs to see what they were all looking at. When I got in view of the TV, my eyes widened at what I saw.
On the screen was video of a helicopter circling over the woods in the back of Zach’s house. Without conscience, I sat down on the couch next to Hayes and waited for the news reporter to get to her point.
“At around nine o’clock this morning, residence Mark Edwards found a dead body on his property. The body, which was identified as Chase Stewarts, was lying dead about 50 yards out from Mark’s house. Mark said that, “He was away for the day on a business trip and came back to his house looking a mess.” He had no idea that something so terrific could happen to him over a period of time like that. Investigators are looking into the case and crime scene to see how Chase Stewarts died that morning…” then she continued onto something else. Far less important for my brain to input at this point. I was in utter shock and couldn’t believe that Chase was dead. My brain started racing, as always. And I could feel a tear trickle down my cheek and I wiped it away. I didn’t know why I was crying, I hardly knew Chase. He tried to sexually assault me in the middle of the woods and he was acting all weird last night. I just couldn’t take into my head that he died last night. That was not even 12 hours ago. I started questioning if I could’ve stopped it, and then my brain was thinking too fast, everything that I thought just started to feel like mush. I felt like mush.
Without speaking a word, I ran upstairs and stripped, jumping into the shower. I think I was crying, but I couldn’t tell because the water dripped on my face as I washed away the dirt from the woods last night.
Then I heard a knock on the door. “I’m taking a shower!” I said shouting so they could hear me through the closed door.
“It’s me, Hayes.” He said, and then I reached out of the shower to unlock the door, quickly pulling it back in so that he couldn’t have seen anything.
“Hi…” he said to me, I started putting shampoo into my hair.
“Uh, hi.” I said, trying not to make anything extreme happen.
“Um, are you okay?” Hayes asked me, I could hear the plastic toilet cover bend from his weight.
“I don’t exactly know… you?” I asked him as I ran my fingers through my hair.
“No.” he said plainly, I stopped washing my hair and froze, my hands by my side.
“Well, I think everyone’s sh-“I tried to put out there, but was interrupted by Hayes side comment.
“No, I know who it was.” Hayes said. I could feel my heart start to pump faster. I stopped the water and grabbed my towel right outside of the curtain, wrapping it around me before I pulled open the curtain. I sat down next to him, him half on the toilet seat and same with me.
“Y-you know who killed Chase?” I asked Hayes, looking him in the eye. This was very serious.
“Yeah.” He said looking at the flooring tiles depressingly.
“Who is it?” I asked him.
“Zach.” Hayes said, looking up at me from the ground, tears in his eyes. He wasn’t upset. He was scared. And I was too.
