Why do we live beneath the sky?
To hold the moments that never die?

Or hold the things we cannot save,
That stay behind beyond the grave?

Do we live just to survive,
Simply breathing to stay alive?

Or do we live so when we part,
We leave our echoes in every heart?

_

Rain fell the night Annys died.

Not the gentle kind,
but the kind that sounded like the sky was breaking apart, as if even the heavens couldn't stay whole while something so precious was being taken away.

They said love was supposed to end in endings.

Clean. Certain. Final.

But Lorenzo never believed in that.

Because even when Annys stopped breathing...
even when her hands turned cold...
even when her voice no longer filled the spaces of his world...

Something inside him refused to accept that she was truly gone.

It didn't begin with tragedy that could be pointed at and named.
No dramatic collapse of reality. No lightning splitting the sky.

It was quieter than that.
More cruel.

It was the way her cup stayed untouched on the table.

The way her jacket still hung by the door, waiting for a return that would never come.

The way her last message sat unread on his phone,
as if time itself had frozen right before the world decided to answer her back.

Mornings still came.
The sun still rose.

People still laughed in streets that had no idea someone had just disappeared from the world.

But Lorenzo didn't move with them.

Annys was gone. And the world insisted on moving forward anyway.

But Lorenzo didn't.

So he stayed behind.

Inside everything she left.

Her laughter that still echoed in empty rooms.
Her scent that lingered on clothes he couldn't bring himself to wash.
Her name that kept forming in his thoughts like a prayer he didn't know how to stop saying.

Grief didn't feel like an event.

It felt like living inside a moment that refused to end.

And somewhere beyond time's understanding.

Beyond logic...

Beyond everything the living were taught to understand...

Something else was happening.

A beginning.

A cry broke through silence. A newborn's first breath, sharp and fragile, announcing life where there had been none.

A baby girl.

She was held carefully, swaddled in warmth, given a name that sounded like innocence itself.

Laureen.

No one in that room trembled when they said it. No one felt the weight hidden beneath it. No one knew that the soul inside her had once known love so deep it defied death.

No one remembered Annys.

Not even her.

Because memories do not always travel with the soul.

Only the heart does.

And somewhere, in a different life that no longer existed, Lorenzo kept mourning a love that the universe had already decided to return. Just not in the way he would ever recognize.

Because some love stories are not rewritten.

They are restarted.
