josh doesn't know why he was so forceful, or why this even matters to him. he doesn't know what this boy is doing to him, they haven't even seen each other's faces.
what if he isn't even a teenaged boy? what if he isn't even from columbus? for all he knows, this person could be one of his friends messing with his head.
josh didn't mean to be so unkind and scare him away, but he just got frustrated with all of this. he should be studying for his exams or playing sports, but here he is trapped inside his room, talking to some anonymous person through a screen.
laying down on the bed behind him, he closes his tired, sad eyes; his thoughts unable to think about anything else but the mystery boy, still on his mind.
...
josh awoke at the sound of his alarm. he gets up quietly, doing his routine to get ready before heading downstairs for breakfast.
his mom smiles as she sees him, flipping the last pancake onto a plate. "goodmorning, josh. did you sleep okay?"
he knows she's heading to work soon. she works a lot, obviously, from having to support a family of four alone.
"yeah." he replies quietly, taking a plate and sitting down at the bar stools.
his mom puts two pancakes down for him and sits next to him. he picks at them, taking a few bites every once in a while.
"you were up late last night... again." she speaks up after a moment of silence.
josh twirls his fork around in the syrup. "no i wasn't."
"i heard you walking around at three a.m." she chuckles.
"you were awake too then." he replies, smiling at her.
she sighs. "have you been taking your serotonin booster pills?"
josh scoffs and chuckles quietly at his mother. "you mean my antidepressants?"
she smiles sadly at him. "i'm sorry."
"it's okay, really."
she ruffles his fluffy, purple hair and shakes her head. "did you have homework?"
"you could call it that." he shrugs.
his three younger siblings come racing out of their rooms before his mother could respond. they all sit down at the table, waiting to be served whist chatting and giggling wildly. josh doesn't know how they have so much energy in the mornings.
"mom!" abby whines. "why did josh get the first pancake?"
"it doesn't matter, they're all the same." jordan argues back, making ashley giggle and roll her eyes.
josh throw the remaining pieces into the garbage and walks back to his room, grabbing his hat and phone and brushing his teeth.
"i'm leaving." he announces, making the two sisters gasp.
"but i haven't done my hair yet!" ashley replies, running to her room. jordan walks out of his and stands by josh.
"i"m ready." he says proudly.
"i'm taking jordan, you girls can walk." he calls out, already annoyed and tired of today. he has to look out for his siblings a lot, being the oldest and all.
"aww, no fair!" abby pouts.
"c'mon, let's go." josh says to his younger brother while rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. they get into his truck and drive off to school.
jordan gets dropped off at the elementary school while josh drives to the high school, parking in his usual spot next to his friends. they're already here of course, as they like to be early so they can hang out before school starts.
