"so why'd you bring your ukulele along?" josh asks as they walk along the bridge towards the park. tyler looks down at the object in his hand, nervous to speak. it's been so long since he's had a real conversation, he's almost forgotten how.
"i thought i-i could play you a song." he stammers. "i've been working o-on one for a while now."
josh smiles at tyler's nervous stutter. "good, i'm glad. i'm sure you're even better live if that's even possible."
tyler blushes and looks away. "nah."
josh makes a laugh noise and sits down on one of the swings. tyler stands in front of him, confused.
"play for me, tyler."
"b-but there's people a-around us." tyler whispers.
"i know. you shouldn't care what they think." josh says, rocking back and forward on the swing.
"WE CARE WHAT THEY THINK."
"i-i don't know, josh..."
"please?" he begs.
"fine."
he looks around at the faces nervously.
"LOOK AT ALL THOSE BLURRY FACES, TYLER."
each person walking by has a blurryface. no matter who they are or what they do, everyone has at least a little dark side.
"don't look at them, focus on me." josh reassures, looking into tyler's eyes.
he nods and takes in a deep breath. the faces seem to blur out when he looks at josh and he relaxes slightly. blurry's presence slowly starts fading. tyler strums the ukulele and people start to look at him but he doesn't seem to notice. he just watches josh smile back at him.
"sometimes you gotta bleed to know that you're alive and have a soul. but it takes someone to come around to show you how..."
tyler pauses and looks up into josh's eyes.
"he's the tear in my heart, i'm alive. he's the tear in my heart, i'm on fire. he's the tear in my heart, take me higher than i've ever been."
josh's heart flutters as he hears the words.
"the songs on the radio are okay... but my taste in music is your face."
the sudden words make josh laugh loudly, making little crinkles by each eye form, allowing tyler to melt inside and smile brightly, something he isn't used to doing. tyler doesn't notice the people surrounding them start to clap along, but josh does. tyler gets more into the music and starts rocking slightly to the beat.
"and it takes a song to come around, to show you how... he's the tear in my heart. i'm alive. he's the tear in my heart, i'm on fire. he's the tear in my heart, take me higher than i've ever been."
the people around cheer and continue to clap along. tyler still doesn't notice as he stares into josh's eyes. the strumming gets quieter as tyler hums to the music.
"you fell asleep in my car, i drove the whole time. but thats okay, i'll just avoid the holes so you sleep fine. i'm driving here, i sit, cursing my government for not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement."
tyler sighs and lowers his voice.
"sometimes you gotta bleed to know that you're alive and have a soul. but it takes sometime to come around to show you how he's the tear in my heart. i'm alive. he's the tear in my heart, i'm on fire. he's the tear in my heart, take me higher than i've ever been."
around twenty people surround them now, clapping along and getting into the music. josh smiles and blushes over how proud he is of tyler.
"my heart... is my armor. he's the tear in my heart, he's a carver. he's a butcher with a smile, cut me farther... than i've ever been."
when he finishes off with one last strum, people start to cheer even louder and clap for him. tyler finally notices them and begins to feel anxious. he rubs his neck and looks around at all the faces that begin to un-blur.
"that w-was tear in my heart by tyler j-joseph." he quickly adds.
josh just stares at tyler with love in his eyes, smiling. tyler looks up at josh as he stands to his feet, wrapping him in a hug.
"thank you." he whispers into his ear. "i'm so proud of you, ty."
tyler blushes and hides his face into josh's chest and the people around them start to realize who the song was written for.
"did you write that?" a woman asks with her two friends behind her.
tyler uneasily rocks back and forward and nods, unable to find the words to talk to her.
"yes he did." josh smiles proudly.
"it was so good." her friend adds. "you've got one lucky boyfriend."
tyler's eyes widen and he chokes slightly, searching for something to say.
"i am very lucky, aren't i?" josh cuts him off, holding him closer.
"you two are adorable." the woman says in awe.
"do you have any more songs?" a man asks holding a girls hand.
tyler looks to josh, who gives him a reassuring smile and nod. he turns back to the couple and nods gently.
"i'd love to hear more. you're gunna go far, kid." he pats his shoulder roughly and walks off, tyler tensing up to the sudden contact.
tyler looks up at josh and blushes.
"did you hear that, ty? they all loved you." josh laughs, squeezing him tighter.
"i-i was so nervous." tyler stammers. "it felt s-so good to perform t-to someone."
"you'll have to do it more often." josh winks. "and nice song by the way. who was it about?"
josh giggles when tyler's face turns a dark red color. he pushes josh playfully. "shut up..."
