"we've been here for over three hours, now." josh says as he checks the time on his phone. tyler's jaw drops as he stares at josh in disbelief.

"what? w-what time is it?"

"almost six. don't worry, it's saturday."

he sighs. "i know, i-i just don't want m-my parents t-to get mad."

josh tilts his head. "they'd probably like the fact that you finally left the house."

he frowns at the thought of them. "th-they wouldn't even b-believe m-me if i-i told them about y-you."

"has it really been that long since you've had a friend?"

"s-seventeen years, i-i guess."

josh smiles sadly at tyler and he doesn't look back at him. he distracts himself by picking up piles of sand with one hand and picking out the rocks with the other.

"well, i guess i'm pretty flattered to be your first."

tyler finally looks up at him and smiles. "i-i'm glad y-you're my first, t-too."

a short silence appears before josh takes notice over how sweaty his friend is. he frowns at the black sleeves on his arms.

"you must be dying, man. take off your sweater or at least roll up the sleeves."

"n-no, i-i'm fine." tyler shakes his head.

"you're not fat, if that's what you're worrying about." josh adds, biting his lip.

tyler scoffs slightly. "i-it's not that, a-and y-you don't have to lie."

"you're really not, though." he sighs. "i just wish you could believe me."

"m-me too."

josh's glare remains locked onto the sleeves. he knows what's under there, he's not stupid. it actually reminds him of the times he would use his own body to cope with his sad thoughts. it's been a while though, and he likes to think that dark part of his life is over.

"have y-you ever been i-in love?"

josh snaps out of his thoughts as tyler asks him the question. he furrows his eyebrows together.

"what?"

tyler sighs. "y-you know, t-that weird thing e-everyone feels n-nowadays."

"i know, i was just taken back a little, is all." josh chuckles.

"s-sorry. i-it was just o-on my m-mind."

he doesn't ask why tyler was thinking about it, although he wishes he did.

"well, i'd like to think that i loved debby, but it's hard to think about that, knowing what happened."

tyler nods, waiting for him to continue.

"but, i dunno. i really did like her a lot. maybe it was love or maybe i was just being dramatic and hopelessly obsessed with the fact that i had a hot cheerleader."

"what d-does it f-feel like?"

"what does what feel like?"

"l-love."

"oh i don't know. it's different for everyone, i guess." he shrugs, looking back at tyler. he notices how unsatisfied tyler looks with his answer, and clears his throat to try it again.

"it's like, to me at least, feeling every emotion at once. like, wanting to be with them all the time, or always having them on your mind, or... even hating them sometimes."

tyler gives josh a weird look at the mentioning of hate.

"you hate them because you love them so much. you can get angry at them and still know that they'll be right there for you. you can hate them and still know that they'll love you. maybe that's why it didn't work out with debby. i never had the chance to hate her."

tyler finally nods at what he's saying. "h-have you ever hated m-me?"

"honestly? i really thought i did. but i think i was hiding what i was really feeling inside."

"a-and what was th-that?"

josh grins. "that you're my bestest friend, of course."

tyler giggles and rolls his eyes, making josh sigh. he knows how he really feels inside.

tyler's smile quickly fades as he feels a growing headache start to form in the back of his head, and his vision picks up the sight of blurryface standing a few feet in front of them.

"ty? what's wrong?" josh asks, noticing how tyler's breaths start coming faster.

"j-josh." he mumbles, fear growing inside of him. "h-he's b-back."

"who's back?" josh asks nervously, looking around. tyler points his bony finger towards the figure, leaving josh even more confused. he didn't see anyone there.

"there's no one there." he informs, cautiously. tyler shakes his head.

"y-yes, he's right th-there."

josh can feel tyler's small hands grab his and hold on tight.

"please t-tell me you c-can see him t-too."

he can really sense how terrified tyler is. he's never seen him act this way.

"HOW'S YOUR LITTLE DATE GOING, TYLER? I SEE HE HASN'T GOTTEN RID OF YOU YET."

"please... p-please make him g-go away."

josh is at a loss for words as the smaller boy hides in his shoulder.

"YOU'RE PATHETIC. TALK TO ME. SHOW HIM HOW CRAZY YOU ARE."

"he d-doesn't think i-i'm crazy." tyler finally whispers, unable to look at anything but the soft fabric of josh's shirt.

"are you talking about... uh, blurryface?" josh asks, still looking around.

"y-you're looking r-right at him!" tyler speaks up louder. "wh-who else?"

"he's not real, tyler. please look at me."

tyler shakes his head, stubbornly. "n-not until he g-goes away."

"okay, um... blurryface, go away." josh says out loud, feeling stupid.

"SCREW YOU, JOSH."

"that's n-not going t-to work. please j-just talk to me."

"GO HOME, TYLER. I CAN'T MESS WITH YOUR HEAD IN FRONT OF ALL THESE PEOPLE."

"it's going to be okay, tyler." josh says, looking down at him. "just look at me, don't look at him. i've got you."

tyler sniffles sadly and very carefully raises his head to face josh. he stays that way for a while, eyes watering and lips trembling. eventually he takes a breath and looks around for blurryface. he's gone.

"y-you did it." he smiles, his heart finally starting to slow down.

"i... i did?" josh asks, letting out a breath of relief. tyler hugs him tightly.

"th-thank you."

"it's okay. as long as i'm around, blurryface won't be." he nods, swallowing a lump in his throat. tyler might be more off the rails than he thought.

"josh?"

"yeah, ty?"

"i hope y-you stick a-around."
