tears spill out of josh's eyes as he reads the words on the screen. tyler forgives him, yet he feels so guilty about everything. tyler shouldn't forgive him. he doesn't deserve to be forgiven. josh feels more horrible everyday because of what he said to tyler.
that stupid little thing called depression has rolled its way back into josh's mind over the past few days, this time more worse than ever. he hasn't gotten out of bed, answered any texts or visits from friends, eaten or slept much, or said much to his family since the debby incident. the doctor even set him up with a new prescription of antidepressants, this time as a higher dosage, which josh has been secretly flushing down the toilet. tyler would tell him to take them, not because it's the right thing to do, but because he cares. debby didn't even know how he felt half the time because he was so blinded by the fact that he had a cute girl on his arm over what was really going on.
he decided that he will go to school tomorrow to see his real friends. tyler will be on his mind the whole time, as usual. then he would go home and visit tyler all night if he had to. everything is going to be okay because tyler forgives him. he doesn't need debby. he can go his whole life pretending that she doesn't exist, and he will. it might take a while, but he will eventually. and that piece of shit pete knew how he felt about debby, and still stabbed him in the back. that stupid backstabber emo. he can go his whole life ignoring him, too.
he picks up his phone and begins writing a text.
please make sure im up for school tomorrow. goodnight.
his mom replies almost instantly.
love you :)
...
brendon immediately tackles josh in a hug the second he sees him. josh smiles sadly.
"i'm so happy to see you, man." brendon whispers, letting go to have a look at him. "we all heard what happened. i'm so sorry."
"oh, the word's out already?" josh chuckles, picking at his fingernail nervously. "is she here?"
"i haven't seen her yet." he replies. "fuck girls, dude. this is why i have a thing for guys, too."
josh smiles. "well, pete isn't all that innocent either. where is that piece of shit, anyways?"
brendon shrugs and looks back at him. "do we hate him now? i promise if you want me to, then i'll hate him for you. we can even beat him up. or burn his nirvana merch."
josh shakes his head. "i hate him but you don't have to. he fucked up but he doesn't deserve to lose everything."
brendon nods. "that's mature of you. and hey, i promise i won't try to get with debby now. just for you, buddy."
josh chuckles. "wow, thanks."
their smiles fade as they see debby and pete pull up in pete's ugly and old volkswagen.
hayley, ashley, and jenna park next to josh's truck and meet them, all three of them hugging josh.
"i'm sorry." hayley frowns.
"i hate pete!" jenna glares. "and debby!"
"it's okay, don't hate them." josh sighs.
"what?" hayley and jenna ask in sync.
"nevermind, just... don't hate them. i'm just going to stay away from them, but you guys don't have to." he replies, watching as the new 'couple' hide from his glares.
"if that's what you want." hayley gives him a half smile. "you were too good for her, anyways."
and for the first time, josh believed that.
