Was I riding a Sphinx? Yes. Was it aware that I was on it? Yes. Was it angry that I was? That was a yes as well.
"Hurry up Magnus! Otherwise it'll bite our heads off." Yelled Alex.
"You really shouldn't be talking Alex!" I shouted back at him.
Once when I was twelve my mom took me to an arcade. It was an emotionally scarring day because of the mechanical bull. That horrible terrifying mechanical bull. It didn't look fast and furious when I saw a horde of teenagers sit on it. My mom warned me about it, but every kid my age did the opposite of what their parents said, so I decided to ride it. I walked up to the brown bull, and inserted two of my golden tokens into the slot. I could hear the gears creaking as I hopped onto its back. It started moving back and fourth slowly. Holding onto the reins was an easy task. All the little kids watched me in awe as I raised a hand to wave at them with a grin on my face. I felt on top of the world.
Then it all went to hell.
The bull started moving at a million miles an hour. I gripped onto the reins like my life depended on it (which at the time, it seemed like it did. Little did I know). My stomach lurched as I was thrown off of the bull and into a pit of foam cubes. I hurled my insides out of my mouth and all over the outfit of a very unpleased manager. Ever since that day the fear of bulls plagued me. And right now, I was feeling a serious sense of Déjà Vu.
"I have the horn! Grab the feather and let's get out of here!" Yelled Frank.
The whole mess began once we got over the shock of seeing the two beasts. Frank decided that he was the best candidate to stealthily get the Troll horn without waking up the Sphinx. He started towards the green dead body as the grass crunched with his every step. I'm not going to lie, Frank isn't the greatest when it comes to sneaking around. But then again, I really shouldn't be talking. He was getting closer as we quietly cheered him on. Then, Frank tripped over a vine and landed face first on the ground; his body laid in front of the Sphinx's head. Let's go team.
The Sphinx got up and sneered at our group. Its sharp teeth were visible as it rose to its full height. It looked to be about as tall as three lions stacked on top of each other. The Sphinx's wings stretched out, and its claws were bared. Frank slowly backed up as it started to speak in a low growling tone.
"Get this riddle right and I won't kill you, but get it wrong and I make no promises." It growled.
"Fun." I nervously laughed to cover up fact that I felt like I was about to soil my pants.
"As an infant, he crawls on all fours; as an adult, he walks on two legs and; in old age, he uses a 'walking' stick." It stated.
"Do we really have to answer this if we're going to kill it anyway?" Whispered Alex to the rest of the group.
"Kill me? Oh, you can't kill me." It sneered.
"That's what they all say before I decapitate them." Alex charged forward.
And that's how we got here.
Using the dagger Hazel let me borrow, I severed a feather from its body.
"I got it!" I was full of pride at the fact that I hadn't died yet.
"Let's go!" Urged Hazel.
"Well, I can't exactly just hop off!" I yelled as I held on for dear life.
"Sure you can." Said Alex.
"Gods be with me." I prayed.
