I was just lounging on my bed going through my phone when my dad came into my room.
"Hey, dad, what's up?"
"Well, I was just wondering if you'd like to come with me to the annual doctors and researchers New Year's party with me?"
"Of course I'll come it's our thing, "
"That's good. I thought you'd forgotten about it now that you have that boyfriend of yours."Like every dad, my dad was also very protective of me and he also reminded me all the time, that no matter who the boy was he would never be good enough for me.
"Oh come on dad. I wouldn't forget things like this."
I'm pretty sure I heard him mumble under his breath.
"Yeah, right."
"Anyway, what's the color code this year?"
"I think that this year it's silver, red and black."
"Oh, okay then."
"You should go and ask if your mother has a dress for you to wear", he said in his way out of my room.
"I will!" I shouted after him.Okay, so let me explain this to you. Every year there is a doctors and researchers New Year's party. Dad gets an invite every year and he's also allowed to take someone with him. But my mom has never been really interested in these things so dad usually asks me to accompany him. It's been our thing for a couple of years now. And also every year my mom designs me a dress for the party.
I went to find my laptop and once I found it, I looked up what this year's speech and introduction were about.
You see, every year there will be someone who holds a speech and introduces something new. It could be for example a new medicine or a new treatment or new equipment. This year there will be Finnish scientists telling us about how they have analyzed T helper 17 cells. The proteins that have been identified in these cells can "potentially be targeted in immunotherapy, especially in disease conditions like cancer and autoimmunity." This is so interesting.
To think that they might be coming up with a medicine against cancer. It was so interesting that the first thing that came into my mind was to tell Mike. So I took out my phone and texted him.
Me: Hey, I sent you the link to the new research that they have done in Finland. You should give it a read :)
Mike: Just read it! Was about to send you the link as well hahaha! Isn't it amazing how they might have found the key to defeat cancer!!
Me: I know right! This truly is wonderful news now Madam Olga can get cured as well.
Mike:...
Me: What?
Mike: You do know that coming up with a medicine against cancer will take years. They don't just come up with it overnight and besides, it's not even sure if they can make it.
Me: I know. I just wanted to have some hope...
Mike: Don't worry everything will be fine.
Me: Yeah... btw how did you know to read the research article?
Mike: Oh I just read the invitation from this year's doctors annual New Year's party
Me: Wait what!? You're going too?!
Mike: Wait you're also going?
Me: Yeah it's a tradition with my dad and I. Then you must be going with your mom right?
Mike: Yes I'm going with my mom and it's been our thing for a while as well.
Me: I wonder how come we've never seen each other lol
Mike: Come on you think I wouldn't see a beauty such as yourself?
Me: ... lol you're being wayyyy too cheesy atm
Mike: Ok just kidding I haven't seen you there bc the venue is such a big place.
Me: You're right, well I'll see you then?
Mike: You'll definitely see me then ;)
Me: ;)I laid on my back staring at my ceiling and sighed dreamily. Everything has been going so well with Mike. If I'd known that relationships are like this then I definitely wouldn't have been so scared to start one. He just makes everything so easy. I never feel awkward when I'm alone with him and he listens to me and respects me.
