"Yes, Caroline," Riley smiled down the phone. "I'm leaving in like 5 minutes... OK, so go without me. I'll see you at the Grill."
Another day in Mystic Falls, another pointless party. Although this time it was being thrown by Caroline, making it a lot less pointless.
Ciara watched her daughter get ready for the party, instantly feeling sad. Riley had always been slightly closer to her father than her mother, but since she'd found out the truth about Gloria, there had been an even bigger distance between them.
"Hey, I heard about that Vicki Donovan girl," Ciara said, trying to start a conversation out of nothing. "She's missing, huh?"
"She left town," Riley said monotonously, repeating the same words that Damon had told her to say. At the Halloween carnival, Vicki had attacked Elena. As a result, Stefan had had no choice but to kill her. With Jeremy compelled and Matt none-the-wiser, they all had to pretend that they had absolutely no idea where she was.
"Come on," Ciara rolled her eyes. "This is me you're talking to. I know that 'left town' is code for 'vampire'. What happened?"
Riley looked away from her mother's brown eyes as she adjusted the bottom of her black skater dress. She hadn't forgiven her for keeping the truth about Gloria a secret, or for moving them to a town full of vampires.
"She. Left. Town."
Riley turned for the door and Ciara sighed.
"Be careful," she reminded her. "You don't know who you can trust."
"I know who I can trust," Riley argued. "It's funny, right now I trust a vampire more than I trust my own mother."
She left the house before her mom could respond, not knowing if her statement was true or not. She knew that she couldn't trust Damon, but maybe Stefan was actually a good guy. Maybe.

Caroline's party was in full-swing when Riley arrived. She made a beeline for her friends, walking right into a conversation between Caroline and Bonnie.
"I can't give it back to you," Bonnie said, her hand grasping the amber necklace that was hanging around her neck. "I'm sorry Caroline, I can't."
"What do you mean you can't?" Caroline asked, looking flustered. Her tone was accusatory and harsh. "Bonnie, it's mine."
"I thought you said it was Damon's?" Bonnie asked, a suspicious look on her face.
"It is."
Caroline looked over her shoulder worriedly, before reaching out for the necklace hanging around Bonnie's neck. There was a static shock sound, and Caroline pulled her hand back quickly.
"You were really gonna pull it from my neck?" Bonnie asked, her face a picture of hurt. "What the hell is wrong with you?"
Bonnie walked away, and Riley turned to Caroline with a raised eyebrow. She'd had enough of that necklace to last a lifetime, but something was clearly wrong with Caroline.
"What?" Caroline asked, flinching away from her gaze.
"I'm just waiting for you to tell me what's so important about that necklace," Riley frowned. "Is it really for Damon?"
"Is it so hard to believe that I just want it back?" Caroline fired back. "God! You guys are supposed to be my best friends, does it even matter why I want it back?!"
"Calm down," Riley said, raising her hands slightly in mock surrender. "I'm just saying... you tried to rip it off her neck."
Caroline spotted Damon out of the corner of her eye. "You know what? Forget it."
