"So their mom, the Original witch, was in the locked coffin?" Riley asked, a look of disbelief on her face. Elena was filling Riley and Caroline in on what they'd missed.

"Yep," she nodded. They were in the Grill, talking about the mysterious invitations that they'd received from the Original family. "It's weird. The Originals are throwing a ball. Like an actual ball."

"Why does evil witch want an audience with you?" Caroline, who also got an invite, asked.

Elena shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know, but I'm gonna find out. Which means that I need an indestructible body guard. What do you say Caroline?"

"A Salvatore would definitely look better in a tux," Caroline smiled, before looking serious. "But I get why you wouldn't want to go there, with the whole Damon thing."

Riley raised an eyebrow. "What Damon thing?"

Caroline gave Elena a look of disapproval. "They made out."

"What?!" Riley asked. "When?!"

"It doesn't matter, it won't happen again," she promised to herself, as they spotted a familiar blonde vampire walking towards them.

"Careful girls," Rebekah said spitefully. "It's all well and good until she stabs you in the back."

"What are you doing here?" Elena asked her. "I know your mom's rules – no hurting the locals."

Rebekah rolled her eyes and scoffed. You'd think she was 18 like them, rather than 1,000+ years old. "Get over yourself, Elena, it's not all about you."

The Original walked over to where Matt was working. She talked to him for a couple of seconds, and then handed him one of the Mikaelson Ball invitations.

"She's inviting him? Why is she inviting him?" Caroline asked under her breath.

"Probably because asking a genuinely nice guy is easier than compelling herself a date?" Riley offered, earning a grin from Elena while Caroline seethed.

"OK, I'm definitely coming," Caroline frowned. "Just to make sure that she doesn't eat Matt."

"Great!" Elena said. "Riley, you're keeping us company, right?"

Riley shook her head.

"What?" Caroline asked. "You have to come!"

"I have to spend the evening avoiding Elijah? No thank you."

"Or..." Elena said delicately. "You could listen to him?"

Riley looked at her friend, betrayed. "Um, are you gonna listen to Klaus?"

"It's different," Caroline dismissed. "Elijah is not Klaus. In the grand scheme of things, all Elijah did was choose his family over a bunch of people that he doesn't even really know. I think it's nice that he wants to make amends."

"We're not saying that you should forgive him," Elena jumped in quickly. "But if he wants to apologize..."

"No," Riley said determinedly. "He wants to apologize so that he can clear his conscience and go back to having a squeaky-clean good-guy reputation. He doesn't deserve it."
