My phone chimed as we were sitting down eating Mrs. Martinez’s delicious dinner.
It was from Jules.
We all need to talk. Tonight 7pm sharp, my place.
I hadn’t talked to the group after the shocked state I left them in, so I was quite surprised.
“What’s with the long face?” Marcus said, apparently seen my confused expression.
“Jules wants to talk.”
“Okay, well then lets go.”
I looked at the clock on my phone. It read 6:3opm.
“Okay.”
………
We arrived on time seeing as how every ones cars were pulled up on the side of the road.
Jules house was in the middle of town, it being similar to all the other on this street. A pretty garden in the front, a walkway, and an intimidating garage door on the side. It was a pretty legit place, I only wished my house was as blended in, yet beautiful, as hers.“Hey guys.” I willed myself to speak through my nervous jibbles of anticipation. Normally I was not easily shy or it at all, but knowing what I caused them made me cower in regret.
They all stood in the living room talking. As soon as they saw me they did the unexpected, they hugged me. Jules in the lead. Her eyes held more regret then I could comprehend.
“I’m sorry.” They said in sync, breaking the hug.
I laughed, everyone joining in after. Marcus who I totally forgot about gazed at me from across the room with a genuine smile. He'd laid down on the couch with his legs propped up, looking relaxed as hell. I rolled my eyes. Men, always making themselves at home.
Silent Jeremy surprised me. “We blamed you when in reality we knew, if you couldn't have saved them, then nobody could have.”
My smile vanished as I glanced and remembered Jess and Taylor were gone. I would save them both, even if it costed my life.
They gave me another hug as tears pooled down my face.
“I know, shh, it’s okay.”
This time Marcus got up and hugged me. I relaxed into the crock of his neck, his body comforting me from head to toe.
It was strange to know that I barely even knew them, yet I felt like I'd known them all my life.
“Who wants tea? I’m afraid we all needs some.” Jules, being the hostess, broke away our moment of sadness and lead us to the kitchen.
“We need to loosen up.” I had explained to the group what had happened in the short time I hadn’t seen them.
“What do you mean loosen up, Jules?”
“Well you know todays Sunday and I received a letter and remembered that NEXT friday is the annual High school forest bonfire party!” She raised her eyebrows like I was supposed to know what she was implying.
“Sooo…?” I skimmed over everyone and they all stared back at me with blank faces.
“Girl, think! It’s going to be across the school!”
“We can get in to Mr.Colebet office with the loud distraction of the music.”
“Yes! Thank you Marcus for being the smart one.”
I scowled. “Hey!”
She smiled widely at me like she didn’t just say that. I shook my head, trying to hide my smile but completely failing.
“I heard those parties get pretty wild.” Marcus eyes glazed with curious. It was kind of cute watching as he looked like a little kid in wonder. It just surprised me that he’d never gone considering he was my guardian and trust me I loved to party so I had always gone. Only high schoolers were allowed. As a kid I would always try to sneak around to see how the parties were. Dance had always excited me and it was one of the only fun things to do in this town.
Kate rolled her eyes. “Exactly!, the more wilder the better.”
“I don’t think it’s a good idea.” I frowned as Marcus ruined my dreams.
“Why?”
“It’s unsafe at times like these and it's my job to protect you.”
I stuck out my bottom lip in a pleading motion. “What happened to the deal.” I wiggled my eyebrows in excitement.
He looked like he wanted to disagree and held a strong firm face. After a minute of staring at each other he sighed and that was pretty much all the approval we needed.
“Okay planning time!” My eyes widened as Mathew shouted, sounding like a high pitched teenager.
He smiled at us sweetly as we started chuckling at his craziness.
“Puberty has come late.”
