I am starting to struggle with writing again. That's not good but I think I can get through this writer's block phase.
____________________________________"If you could go back in time and tell me all of the things that you ever thought of me, would you?" she asked as she stood in the middle of the void. Her back was turned to him, but he knew her well enough to recognize even just her voice.
"What are you talking about, (y/n)? Of course I would, I can. I'm not letting you die," Add spoke to her.
"But don't you think it's too late for that. I'm already dead," (y/n) said as she turned around to reveal her wounds. Add stared at her in shock.
"This is just a dream though isn't it. You aren't actually dead are you?" Add said as calmly as he could. He wanted to be right...
"That's for me to know and you to find out. I'm running out of time, yet you have plenty of it. Will you let me die this time?" she said.
"This time? What are you talking about? Just tell me where you are." Add was somewhat confused, but he needed to locate her.
"How could I do that? This is just a dream is it not? I know not of my true whereabouts, but maybe you could find me before it's too late, before history repeats itself," (y/n) explained as she began to fade.
"(Y/n), no wait," Add yelped. He reached out to her only for him to end up alone. What she told him made no sense. And how was she able to reach him in his dreams? Was that an ability of hers? "(Y/n)? Where did you go?" he asked after a good minute of just standing there. He hoped she would come back especially considering his dream had not ended.. She then appeared to him with no wounds this time.
"I thought you'd have woken up by now. Why are you still stuck here in this dream?" she said before disappearing again.
"I don't know how to save you. I don't know what I can do to keep you from dying. I'm guessing that I've had this problem before," Add said, knowing that she could still hear him or else he'd be awake.
"Well, you're half right. In different timelines, you've always failed and you always started over by leaving me in the yard of your old home. It never works, I assure you. This seems to be one of the better timelines though," (y/n) said as she reappeared, sitting next to him as he stood. He sat down next to her only for her to disappear once more.
"Then what do I do?" Add asked her. He now knew that this wasn't the girl he knew but rather...her phantom.
"You're asking me? How come? You usually make those types of decisions on your own. The you I remember just kept me around because I was a convenient friend, someone to help you achieve your true goal. Your mother is and always has been your priority," (y/n) said from behind him.
"You knew that and yet you stayed with him. Why?" Add asked. He refused to acknowledge himself as the person she described for he knew that he was nothing of the sort.
"Because I could care less if he cared about me. I made a promise many years ago that I always make. That promise keeps me trapped in this endless cycle of inevitable death. We were supposed to stay friends forever and I intended to keep my promise no matter how much you changed," (y/n) said as she leaned her back against his.
"I'm not him. I would never treat you that way," Add softly spoke.
"But you did. You always do...but this time I can tell that something about you is different. Will you be able to save me this time or will you just fail again?" (y/n) said.
"I don't really know...but I know for sure that you aren't just some convenient friend to help me reach my goals. I've been told that I would have been able to do everything without you, but doing everything with you was kind of fun. I'm not sure I can imagine what it would have been like if you weren't there," Add said. (Y/n) was now leaning on his shoulder.
"This you is different for sure. What exactly do you think of me since you're so different now?" (Y/n) slipped an arm around his waist, pulling him into a sort of half hug.
"If I could tell you I would, but I don't know how. Sentiments like this one were never really my thing," Add admitted. (Y/n) laughed at him a little, lifting his downcast spirit.
"I understand now. The me of this timeline is very lucky to have you. She needs more help than she lets you know about. And spend more time with her, okay," (y/n) said.
"You're just a part of my dream right? How exactly are you able to talk to me now?" Add questioned, having already guessed who she really was...or rather what she really was. (Y/n) leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
"I wish I could tell you, but even I do not know. Perhaps it is the curse of my original timeline. Regardless, the answer is nowhere to be found," she replied. A chill shot through him as he was reminded that she was in fact a ghost, but for whatever reason, he didn't react the way that he thought he would. Ghosts terrified him no matter what form, yet he was strangely at peace.
"I'll never become Esper. I promise you that. I'll make sure to let (y/n) know that she's appreciated," Add said with a nod.
"Thank you. That means a lot to me," (y/n)'s ghost said with a sad smile. Then she disappeared for good and Add remained there in the dream void for a moment before he decided to wake up. When he did find himself back in reality, he wiped his eyes a bit and immediately got up to get dressed for travel.
"Where are you headed off to?" Esper asked as Add left his room. He had been leaning against the wall next to Add's door, a constant monitor of his every actions.
"I'm going to find (y/n). I might not know how to save her, but I'm not going to just let her go," Add said as he kept walking. Esper pulled him back by the arm.
"I can't let you do that. I don't want to have to relive the events that happen in the future just because you can't move on," Esper said.
"It's not that I can't move on. I don't want to because unlike you, I actually care about (y/n)," Add said.
"I do care about (y/n). That's why I'm trying to let her live her last moments the way that she wants to. All she ever did was stick with me. I never really knew what it was that she wanted to do for herself because I never asked. If you bring her back here you'll only be doing the same." Esper seemed to become even more uneased by the second.
"No, I won't. I know what I need to do," Add said. Esper glared at him.
"If you think telling her how you feel is going to do anything, you're wrong," Esper growled, his grip on Add's arm tightening.
"I don't need to. She already knows. I just need to go after her. That's all she would need to be convinced that I actually still care. Besides, I just made a promise..." Add said. "Nothing you say can stop me this time, and I'll fight you if I have to."
Esper's glare faltered, and he sighed before letting Add's arm go. "Don't go get your heart broken." He gave Add a light shove and shooed him away.
"What makes you think that I'd let that happen?" Add said with a smirk before leaving. He was eager to find (y/n) and hoped that he could reach her soon.
