"Yeah, it happened just after I left the building," the judge repeated the information to her friend Detective Russell Ward after waiting a few hours to express her concerns. The two people knew each other for years, having crossed paths in a heated court session at the very beginning of both their careers. They detested the other at first but quickly gravitated into being the only ones in the justice system that they trusted.
"What about the girl, was she with you?" He asked and right then the woman swivelled her chair around to find Amberle preoccupied with a note pad and a pencil. Lost in her thought, Jos observed her, realizing she dragged the pencil against the page.
"Yes, Amberle was there too,"
"Did you get a good look at the license's plate or anything?"
"No, I could only say that it's a black SUV, it's all I could make out then."
"I see. Well, Lyn, I'll be on this for you for sure. I'll have an officer examine the security footage, see what we find. I'll make sure that your home's monitored and even the apartment the girl's staying in-"
"Amberle," the judge interrupted Russell as he spoke and the line went quiet for a second. "Sorry, what?"
"Her name is Amberle." The woman corrected him. The young girl wasn't some nameless thing but a person with a name and identity. But at her correction, Joslyn felt the tension cutting through the line.
"Right. I'll make sure that a guy or two watches over Amberle too." He continued.
"Thank you so much. Hey, before you go I need some information about a guy, possibly a drug dealer or something but right now I don't have much other than the possible alias, its Danny. Might have been arrested for drug-related offences and only goes by that alias. He might also be from around the city, could you see if you can find something?"
"Yeah definitely. I'll get back to you when I do." Russell replied and he and the woman exchanged their goodbyes and once again Joslyn was left studying Amberle.
"What are you doing?" She asked and the girl flinched, clutching her chest, the pencil still sat between her fingers.
"I-uhh, I'm sketching," Amberle said truthfully after some seconds.
"You draw?"
The woman never thought Amberle would be much of an artist. If she was being honest she didn't know much about the girl's interests, Amber rarely ever talk about them.
"Kind of,"
"What did you draw?"
"Something,"
"Something, like what?" The judge was curious now that the girl was going around in circles.
"I don't expect you to be like bob ross or Pablo Picasso but have a style of your own. So can I see?"
"No."
"Why not Amberle?"
"Because it's a sketch of you."
"Why me?" The woman blushed a little. She felt special, no one had ever sketched her before.
"I'm bored and you are the only thing of interest in this room, why wouldn't I?"
"You can be so sweet when you want to be," stated Jos inciting the brunette to shrug. There seemed to be no way Joslyn could make the girl reveal the artwork, so she didn't force her, she turned back to her work instead.
"So Russell, my detective friend said he'd help us to find who was responsible for yesterday's incident and also keep his eyes on my family and you. And added to that, starting from tomorrow I have to be in court and you'll be left here with Victoria."
"For how long?"
"I don't know, probably a week or more but don't worry you won't have much to do except fax me a few documents."
"Okay. You'll still come to the apartment too right?"
"Probably, probably not," the woman answered watching the girl's disappointed permeates.
"Do you want me too?"
"It all depends on you miss," Amberle responded.
"I see. I don't think I can for some time because I'll be super busy."
"I understand," Amberle replied and the woman gave her a tiny smile. The girl was getting attached and so was she. Joslyn guessed by now that even the brunette was aware.
