The drive was conducted in silence, for the most part, the tension within the car was palpable, enough to caress one's throat, strangling them softly but the women were thankful that it would be over soon. Amberle knew Joslyn was still upset, but she didn't care much for it, she was simply elated that the judge was able to help her get out of that place in one piece.
Stealing a glance over to the attentive driver, the woman's focus was trained to the road and Amberle couldn't help how much of a beautiful lady she thought she was. Pale hair pulled into a ponytail revealing her youthfulness, a pleasant face and distinct lips. How old was she? Mid-forties? Late forties? Late thirties? It was possible. Whatever she was though, the girl thought she looked cute.
"Hey, Joslyn I'd like to thank you for what you did back there," she said absentmindedly and shrieked at the sudden halt of the car. The woman slammed her foot onto the breaks bringing the vehicle to a stop, glaring viciously at her. She squinted and in shock, the young girl clutched her chest.
"Address me as Joslyn one more time and I swear to god I'll reach across this seat and strangle you." She spoke slowly through gritted teeth and the girl swallowed hard. She shrugged.
"Geez, I'm sorry, what do you want me to call you then?"
"Ma'am or even judge Harper would suffice," She replied and Amberle rolled her eyes.
"So, your honour?" The girl asks with genuine uncertainty. Joslyn scowled, her pretty face upturning dramatically, her forehead creased, she turned her attention back to the road.
"Where are your parents?" She asked after the silence became unbearable. Why was she interested in the first place?
"Dead,"
The woman noticed the girl's nonchalance after dropping such a bomb and she almost choked on her spit. "Are you serious?" She cleared her throat.
"Why would I be dishonest about that?"
"Because you have a reputation miss Wilson and it's not a good one."
"Yeah, well I'm not lying. They met their unfortunate demise when I was a baby. Plus, I know where this is going but I'd just like to say that I don't need help from my family or relatives."
"I see. So this girl Stacy, why would she try to frame you like that, isn't she supposed to be your friend?"
"Yeah, it's what I thought. I don't know why she got angry like that maybe she's envious." Said the younger girl and Joslyn scoffed, never taking her eyes off the road.
"Why would she envy you?"
"Because I'm a lot of things she's not—like hot," she replied with a smirk and the woman finally tossed her a look filled with disdain.
"You really are obnoxious, aren't you?"
"It's what I'm good at, isn't it? It's also why you like me. You like the thrill, the excitement the unheralded but interesting things I'm capable of," again Joslyn scoffed, she turned her gaze back to the lonesome road.
"You think I like you?"
"I don't think, I know."
"I don't even know you besides that one time you appeared before me in court and what was that almost three months ago?" Joslyn responded. Her reflection on the first time she came across the unstable girl revealed that at least she was intrigued by the girl's inability to not give a damn.
"So you're going to play like that? Swell, so tell me, if you didn't like me why is it that you're here helping me?"
The question incited the older woman to pull over at the side of the road before turning to face the dark-haired girl. A stern expression unfolds on her face, the lines on her forehead returned. She pursed her lips, her pale eyes never leaving her face. The woman hated the girl for exposing the truth.
"I am a married woman, happily married. I have a family: a husband, two sons and a grandchild and you think that I'm infatuated with you, a mentally stagnant 23-year-old?" She asked and Amberle frowned. Her choice of words was offensively accurate.
"You could have all that and still wander, I know you're intrigued at least, why else would you come to rescue someone you hardly remember let alone know?" She asked with an arched brow. There was silence after that until Joslyn puts the car back into drive. The soft roaring of the engine consumed the silence.
"I need you to be quiet for the rest of the ride."
"Yeah, are you my mother, no? Then there's no need to tell me what to do." Her defiant words angered the judge, her nose flared, her jaw worked vigorously and she gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white.
Slowly, Joslyn leaned closer to the girl and she pulled back into her seat at the deadly glare within those attentive eyes.
"If I have to say another fucking word to you about how to conduct yourself, mark my words I'm going to lose it. Do you have to be ungrateful?"
"I'm sorry, geez," Amberle grumbled averting her eyes out the window into the still night. She heard the woman beside her exhale loudly. Out the corner of her eye, she saw her slump her shoulder and she knew it was because she was tired, it was three in the morning so she couldn't blame her.
"Tomorrow you and I are going to have a very long conversation about this friend of yours and what's going on. As for now I just want to take you home and head back to my house." She said, stifling a yawn. The girl didn't respond, instead, she tuned her out while staring out the window, her mind completely blank.
