Pack Politics

Verde had been born into a rogue family and lived among humans most of his life because his parents wanted him to experience a normal life away from packs. He had zero pack experience.  In the last six months he found himself mated to two well known pack alphas, co-alpha of their pack, friends with several other pack alphas and their subs, and now host to a bevy of supernaturals he would never have believed he'd ever meet in this lifetime. He was a tightly wound bundle of nerves speaking in front of everyone but by the time lunch was half over, he settled down and was socializing with others like old friends. With the help of his new alpha-sub friends - his new family, he pulled off a spectacular luncheon with lots of food, drink, and laughter.

The alphas and the other dominants slinked off to their own little corner as the afternoon grew late. Alpha Syms and Alpha Thaddeus were still lingering around making them wonder if two ancient werewolves such as them had nothing better to do than hang around a bunch of youngbloods smoking hookah and talking politics.  Their guests apparently were intrigued and listened with great interest as the two older were told them about the old days when werewolves were ruled by a king and royal court.

"The last king was ruthless and bloodthirsty. He was power hungry and waged war not only against other weres but other supernaturals as well."  Syms got a dark look on his face.  "He ignored everything told to him by the goddess and eventually wolves rose against him."

Thaddeus picked up where Syms left off.  "Syms, Whitebeard, Greystone, Lightmeade, Minerva, myself and others joined forces to take down the king and his army. We dissolved the royal court, broke up his lands, and we adopted the council with representatives and liaisons from every pack."

"Does each pack have its own specialty or just Dark Moon?" Hakon asked.

Dom sat up in his seat. "Dark Moon North and Central are in charge of military operations that go beyond normal pack policing but require a heavier hand called upon by the council. Dark Moon West houses the supernatural hospital and werewolf rehab center. Any were injured on missions goes there where all the best multi-species doctors and therapists are. They understand and help were get back on their remaining limbs and adjust to pack life with their disabilities. Before were used to kill themselves or go rogue from the shame and humiliation. They helped end all that and stopped packs from seeing disabled weres as weak and liabilities."

The alphas all nodded with smiles.

"Blackhawk is the leader in green technologies and outfitted the packs with renewable energy set-ups.  Frost Moon protects the water that streams from the mountains surrounding their pack and built all the cloaking and camoflauge equipment used in operations.  Whitebeard is a heavy manufacturer of specialty equipment and vehicles used in our military operations."

Samshin looked around at all the alphas ranging from age twenty-five to thirty, varying in build, customs, and specialty.  "How did you become allies? Your packs are all so different."

Cisero took over. "Ari and Dom are cousins. Their parents are brother and sister twins. One twin married an alpha of a neighboring pack and they decided to join the packs together. Natelly and I established the hospital at Dark Moon West when we were injured and it sort of became a pack. We worked with Dom and Ari so it was natural.

"Pulaire worked at the hospital at DMW and convinced Raven, his mate and alpha of Blackhawk, to meet with me. Bunny being an alpha and knowing how packs run, helpd organize and show the pack was strong and financially stable enough to be allies."

Frost moon and Oak Moon are neighbors and close friends. Alpha Syms brought their cloaking technology to our attention during a mission.

Whitebeard is long time established pack. Allies with Dark Moon and Oak Moon for eons. Sloan and Snow met at some point after Snow's rejection at Oak Moon and became friends. Sloan learned Erion was his mate when Eri was only ten during an alpha assembly. So he approached Alpha Whitebeard."

"That's when he got kicked out of his pack," Alpha Syms added.  Sloan nodded in agreement.

"So how are leaders for packs chosen?" Gaeus asked. Although gargoyles are stone by day, they could communicate via telepathy if awake.

"It depends on the pack," Ari cleared his throat. "Some packs are traditional and the alpha is decided by birth-oldest inherits pack like Frost Moon and Whitebeard. Others fight for leadership anyone can challenge. These packs are usually more primitive and violent like Lightmeade pack."

Raven snorted. Cisero rubbed his shoulders.

Ari sipped his water and continued. "Others go through a battery of tests and trials to prove they are worthy and the leader is chosen by merit, strength, intelligence, and ability like Dark Moon. Some alphas are chosen by vote like Blackhawk. Dark Moon West, Cisero and Natelly established the hospital and therapy center for injured were and supernaturals after their rejections and sort of became pack alphas when people began settling in around the area."

"Fascinating." Gaeus replied.

"I hear there is a lot of hate between some of the packs," Szymon, the golem, said looking at young Sloan.

He sighed. "Yes."

Szymon hesitated unsure of what to say.

Sloan shifted in his seat uneasy about telling the story.  "Alpha Greystone, my father, and Erion's mother were together for over ten years and in love. But she found her mate, Alpha Whitebeard when my father introduced his best friend to the love of his life."

Szymon's eyes grew wide. "Whitebeard and your father were best friends?"

Sloan nodded sadly. " My father and Lady Whitebeard's humans wanted them to be together but their wolves wouldn't let them."

"Is that supposed to happen?" Ozmas asked looking around. "The wolves just take over and rule the host?"

The other supernaturals wondered as well. They didn't have another entity sharing their body or consciousness. Hakon was thoughtful. Vampires also had another being living inside them but it seldom forced its own will when it came to mates.

Young Greystone shrugged. "There have been some cases like that. Mainly rejection. But it's like that sometimes. Sometimes a human and its wolf are of one mind. They strengthen each other. Sometimes the human and wolf are at odds. The wolf wants and gets what it wants and what the human wants the wolf won't allow."

Autumn's eyes filled with tears. "That is so sad."

"It is what it is," Sloan replied. "However, it has worked out in some ways so I won't lament on what has already happened."

"Wisely stated," Samshin replied stroking his beard.

"Why does the eclipse affect you weres so?" Neiryn asked.

Raven looked around. "We don't speak of it to outsiders but since you have pledged your allegiance to us I will tell you." He dropped his voice and they all leaned closer.

"During the lunar eclipse we're vulnerable. Our wolf pushes to the surface and our human goes to sleep. However, we do not have our wolf powers."

"So basically your wolves are walking around in your human bodies without your werewolf powers?" Indigo asked with a frown.

Raven nodded.

"But you'd only have your human strengths and weaknesses," Ozmas pointed out.  His wings were fluttering rapidly in agitation.

All the alphas nodded.

Neiryn's eyes widened. "That means- "

Not that it needed confirmation, Raven spoke the last part in their heads.

  >It's easier to kill us.<
