Dom sat rocking little Nicolau in his arms. He'd arrived from his mission to news Chevy was in labor. He ran out before the debrief and drove from Oak Moon breaking every speeding law in the supernatural and human world. He made it just as his little alpha Nicolau came out singing his arrival.
Dom's stepmother beamed with pride. "What a joyous day! Little Nicolau is beautiful. Congratulations."
Dom and Chevy smiled gratefully.
She lightly slapped Dom's shoulder. "What's with this sullenness? You should be more energetic. A new child is a blessing."
Chevy looked tiredly down at his lap. "We are grateful and excited for the arrival of our little alpha. It's just-"
"Our friends are hurting," Dom replied grasping his hand.
She waved her hand dismissing their comments. "Everyone has problems." She leaned over Nicolau and cooed at his little yawn. "Theirs shouldn't overshadow your joyous occasion."
Ari had been standing quietly by the door and strode further into the room. "How joyous can one be when their family is displaced? A family member is missing? A child is missing and another-the same age as their own - is going to die?"
She rolled her eyes. "It's just like you, Ari, to always be thinking of others. It's not their fault these things happened. They should ignore it and focus on their little bundle. If no one can handle it, then cut them off. Honestly, Ari."
He narrowed his eyes at her.
She arched a brow. "And I heard of your mate. An ex sex slave." Her voice was laced with disdain.
Ari felt his blood boil. Chevy let out a low growl.
She ignored them and continued on. "Damaged goods. Thank the goddess he's gone. We can find you a proper mate. One that doesn't bring shame to our family."
Colton, Starling, and Dean grabbed Ari before he could lunge across the room and shred his step-aunt. Colton hissed as claws raked across his chest. Ari's wolf was out and he wanted blood.
"How dare you talk about my mate! I should kill you where you stand," he growled.
She crossed her arms in defiance. "I'm the mate of an elder on the council. No one would dare."
"There's a first time for everything," Starling muttered as the alpha struggled against them all.
Dom pressed Chevy's face to his chest as the beta burst into tears. His dark eyes glared at his father's mate. "My father is on his way to retrieve you. Please, leave."
She smiled and clapped her hands. "Oh! Good idea. I can go shopping for my little bundle." She gathered her things and walked over to the new parents. "Blessings on blessings, darlings."
Dom pulled back as she went to kiss him on his cheek. Chevy kept his head buried against his mate. He was angry and sad and didn't know what to do with his emotions. He stiffened as she stroked his head.
"Rest. I'll be back later." Her heels made the most obnoxious noise ever as she hurried to the front door.
"No rush," Dean snipped as the door closed. They released Ari who quickly regained control of himself.
Colton lifted a piece of his tattered shirt and looked down at his healing cuts. "Good riddance."
Margot put her hand on Ari's arm. "What a horrible woman. I would never be so cold and callous."
