Dark Moon West - Pack
Verde smiled and pushed the Barbie car with its rider toward Uni trying to get her to play. Bubbly Uni just sat on the floor staring at the floor. A frown touched Verde's lips. He'd been trying to get the child to engage all day. She just stared off into space and wouldn't speak. she didn't eat breakfast or have snack. She stood like a doll while Verde washed and dressed her up. She didn't have a fever and didn't seem unwell so the wolf was more than concerned.
Verde took her hands in his and tried to make eye contact. "Uni, honey. Talk to daddy."
She blinked but didn't speak to him or look at him.
"Baby? What's wrong? What did I do to make you angry?"
Again, no response.
Verde sighed heavily. His chest ached. What was wrong with his baby? Was it something he said? Did he do something wrong? Was she upset he was spending a lot of time with the others? Was she lashing out at having two daddies even though she seemed to like them? Did they need more daddy-daughter time?
There was a knock on the door. Raoul popped his head in the doorway and gave Verde a slight smile. The house was quiet without little Uni running about with the other children or her animated conversations with pack members or the other supers. The dhampir knew Verde was blaming himself.
"How is she?"
Verde smoothed a lock of hair behind Uni's ear. "Still the same. I'm beginning to worry."
Raoul sat next to Verde and rubbed his back. "I'm sure it's nothing." Verde leaned against the younger supernatural and sighed again. He had gotten close to the younger half-breed and his mates in the short time they were at the pack.
They heard the doorbell ring downstairs then several panicked voices when the door was opened. Verde and Raoul looked at each other in confusion then stood and left the room. They could hear the beta, Wren, talking with other members of the pack.
"Beta, there's something wrong. I'm telling you."
"They're like...like...."
"Dolls."
"Empty."
Wren was trying to be reassuring. "I'm sure it's nothing."
A woman Verde recognized as Rita, the mother of a child Uni's age, grasped Wren's hands in desperation. "Beta, it is! My child is like a ball of energy from the time he gets up until he goes to bed. He never stops. Today...he's lifeless. He won't eat, sit, talk, play."
A delta that worked at the school spoke next. "He's not the only one either, Wren."
Verde walked up to the group. His heart was pounding in his chest. Uni wasn't the only one that this was happening to? As co-alpha he felt the need to get involved. "Is it all the children?"
One of the female guards with three children, one a teen, spoke next. "I'm not sure of all the children. My Kevin is a returnee."
"Returnee?" Verde looked over to the beta.
"They were kidnapped once and rescued," Wren clarified.
Verde frowned. Uni was never actually kidnapped. Almost, but Chevy stopped the guy that tried to take Uni from the mall. There had to be a connection, though. He started for the stairs.
Wren ran after him. "Alpha?"
"Uni," he turned to the group that had come to the house for guidance. "We need to take the returnees and lock them up."
