Zayn's P.O.V.
"Adelaide!" I shouted for another time. Evelyn watched me quietly with a subtle pout on her somber face. I wish I knew if Adelaide was okay. I have spent an immense amount of my time worrying about Adelaide and caring for her. Being without her was difficult, but knowing that I could not actually get to her made it worse.
I paced around in circles. How could I let this happen? I could have watched Adelaide more carefully. I could have known something was wrong. I should have known that Gemma was out there. I groaned as I covered my face with my hands. If I were alive, I would be having a migraine.
"I know this isn't what you would want to hear right now, but there was nothing you could've done to stop Gemma. Gemma loves playing unexpected tricks, and you cannot blame yourself for not seeing through them," Evelyn told me with a soft voice. I nodded. She was right. I am over-analyzing everything here. It was not my fault.
"There may be something I could do." My head perked up and my eyes watched her contemplative expression. "I am foolish. I didn't think of this before," she shook her head as she got lost deep in thought. Then, I realised it too. She is a specter, meaning that she can move through walls and other barriers. It may not work because it is a magical barrier that is holding me back, but it is worth a shot.
"I could distract her for you, and maybe it would buy you enough time to enter the room and get to your girl." I meant to listen and understand, but when she referred to Adelaide as "your girl", it sent a jolt through me and my eyes widened in fascination and fear. Something inside of me is changing. Was my father correct?
Evelyn waved her shimmery arm in front of my face and I came to my senses again. "I'll go now whilst you wait by the door. You'll know when to come through. You will feel it," she advised before moving towards the wall. I briskly moved to the door and my fingers wrapped around the doorknob.
Evelyn smiled at me briefly before slipping through the wall. I waited a moment, and just as she had mentioned, I just felt that I could step inside. I twisted the doorknob in an instant and my eyes met Adelaide's. I glanced behind her and noticed Gemma with her back to me. Evelyn was in front of her and she seemed to be telling Gemma something.
I ran to Adelaide and she hugged me tightly. Gemma spun around to face me and she glared before I felt myself flying towards the back wall behind me. "Let him go!" Adelaide screamed as I struggled to move from the wall towards her. "Gemma!" She cried but Gemma felt no remorse as she turned around to meet nothing. Evelyn had vanished.
Adelaide rushed to me and I was amazed that Gemma's powers were not working on Adelaide as well as they had before. She hugged me once more and I closed my eyes, smelling the sweet aroma on her smooth skin. "Zayn," she whispered and I knew she was going to say more.
"I don't know what I'm thinking and all of these feelings are so different." What was she saying? I hoped that she would not speak the words I sensed she was about to. We do not know for certain if she is entirely immune to the curse. "Stop," I whispered to her, but she put her index finger to my lips.
"I can't explain it, but I know that it's real..." "Adelaide," I pleaded for her to stop but she would not listen to me. "Zayn, I'm in love with you." If I were able to breathe, I would have stopped by now. I waited for something to happen. For her to freeze in place. Her eyes would widen and the air would not come to her lungs. She would choke and fall to the floor only to leave me in tears for the first time since my mother had died.
But nothing happened, and she was still alive.
