I become zoned out after I find out how Nick, Joe and Matt got their powers. I think and think of Matt. I know he really does like me now and the only reason he was playing with me before was because Rob and Scotch were forcing him. But I still don’t see why he’s begging for me to give him a chance when he still has to kill me. I decide I need to talk to him. I begin looking for him in the hallways at school. He’s in 9th grade and I’m in 7th so I need to look in the high school. As tall as I am for a thirteen year old girl, I’m an ant to those senior boys. So I always end up getting pushed around the hallways. One day, I see him sprinting down the hallways trying to be on time for class. He dodges the taller, older high school boys and weaves between the other students who are standing and talking. “Matt!” I call out. He turns around for a second when he hears his name. Our eyes meet for a moment but then he turns and runs. I stand there for a moment until a tall boy with a growing beard shoves me into a locker. I watch Matt until he vanishes into the ever-growing crowd of shoving children.

I become a little depressed at Le Café. Instead of wrestling Hunter and Jenny like I usually do, I just clean the whole time. We still rarely get customers since we just opened. Hunter and Jenny quickly notice the difference in me. “What’s wrong with you? You’re no fun anymore.” Hunter whines. I look up from the bright turquoise table I’m cleaning. “What do you mean?” I mutter. “You’re not talking anymore!” Jenny insists. I raise an eyebrow. “I’m talking right now aren’t I?” I point out. “Yeah but you’re actually working!” Hunter complains. “You should try it sometime.” Mute calls out from the kitchen. Jenny giggles. “What the fudge is bugging you? Don’t try to deny it. Something’s wrong.” She says firmly. “It’s Matt!” I admit angrily. “Matt?” Hunter asks. I turn back to the blindingly bright table. “You wouldn’t get it.” I mumble. “What is there to get? He likes you and you hate him . . . unless . . .” Jenny looks at me suspiciously. “Unless what?” Hunter asks. I’ve had enough. I stand up straight and walk to the door. “I’m taking a walk.” I say angrily storming out of Le Café.

I walk around random streets. Near Le Café, there’s a little park with a cement path going through it. If you follow the path, it leads you to a small garden. It has big, bright flowers and weeds covering the ground. It’s a tiny place and no one really ever comes into the garden. I go there to be alone. So I crawl into a rosebush and think. I know I don’t hate Matt. But at the same time he’s a jerk. Trying to win my heart when he knows it’s beyond obvious we can’t even be friends. I hear a twig snap. “Matt?” I call out randomly. I’m hoping he followed me here so we can talk. “Guess again bitch.” Nick’s voice murmurs. “Shit.” I whisper leaping out of the rosebush. I transform and start to run but Nick grabs me. He pulls me towards him. “Let go of me!” I snap trying to wriggle out of his grasp. He just laughs. “Joe?” he calls out. Joe’s head pops out of a patch of flowers. “Nick you gotta smell these!” He sees me and his face burns. I ignore him and look around. “HELP!” I scream desperately. Nick’s hand presses down on my mouth. He pulls out his knife and holds it to my neck. “Shut it. Or you’re dead, girl.”

My eyes frantically shift around hoping to see someone. I feel the cold blade of Nick’s knife lightly press down on my skin. I shudder and fight tears. “GET AWAY FROM HER!” a voice screams. A portal opens up in the air and Matt jumps out. He pulls out his mace and flies over to Nick. He swings his mace at Nick and the spikey ball hits his head. Nick drops me and turn to face Matt. I quickly dive back into my rosebush. Matt turns to Joe and smacks the top of his head with his hand.  “Traitor!” Nick growls trying to grab Matt. From inside the bush I hold out my hand and shoot a blue beam at Nick. “Ow!” he shouts. He and Joe teleport away. Matt dives into the bush. “I know this is a bad time but I need to talk to you,” I begin. Matt nods. “I know about Rob and Scotch and why you’re doing this.” I whisper. Matt nods. “I’m sorry I ever agreed. They threatened our families too. They said they’d kill my parents and Joe’s too. And Nick has this baby sister . . .” His voice leaves him. Every day I find out more about this trio of killers. For a moment, I stare into his huge green eyes. Without even thinking, I lean in and kiss his cheek. He teleports away with a red face and a huge grin.
