Krys

In all honesty, I ditch study hall sometimes. I don’t completely not show up but I take the bathroom pass and walk around the shared wing. Part of me does it to be rebellious. Part of me does it because study hall is boring. But I mostly do it in the hopes I’ll run into Matt. So in study hall, I ask the teacher for the bathroom pass. She sighs annoyed. “Go ahead. It’s your own time you’re wasting.” She mutters handing me the pass with a pink smiley face on it. “Okay . . .” I reply snatching the pass and walking out of the room. I walk a little but before I get too far, a loud fire alarm blares through the halls. I cover my ears and follow the evacuation procedure. I look around and starting going toward the nearest door downstairs. I hear a brief, crackly announcement on the P.A. but I don’t understand a word of it. I keep searching for a door. No one else is in the hallway which is strange if we’re evacuating. The fire alarm goes off often enough that it’s not even scary. I start walking towards another door wondering where everyone else is. As I’m walking I see a yellow blur and it crashes into me.

“Matt!” I snap. What is he doing transformed in school? “Uh . . . Krys?” he asks nervously. I look to see he’s holding a gun. I put two and two together. That alarm wasn’t for a fire, it was for a lockdown. That must’ve been what the announcement was saying. And we’re under a lockdown because Matt has a gun! “What the fuck! Why do you have a gun in school?” I demand. “I . . . I’m sorry.” He whispers. “Come with me.” he says standing up. “No way.” I stand up as well. “It’s important. I need to show you something.” He pleads. “Show me what?” I wish he’d put that stupid gun down. “Just come with me!” he snaps. “No!” I shout louder. I lift my gem and transform. “Ugh! Krys.” He mutters to himself. He steps toward me. “What are you-” I begin but his arms wrap around me and he picks me up. He grunts. “Put me down!” I shriek. He shakes his head and opens a portal. “Where are you going? Put me down!” I yell my voice echoing through the hallway. He walks through his portal taking me with him.

Teleporting is like a scene changing in a movie. One second we’re in the hallway and next thing I know we’re up on a tree branch. He finally sets me down. I slap him across the face. “I deserve that.” He mutters. “What did you do?” I ask. He points at the ground and what I see makes me sick to my stomach. John is holding May in his arms. May is covered in blood and still bleeding. Her face is white and she looks terrible. “I . . . I’m sorry . . . I shot her.” Matt confesses softly. “You what? You did this?” I squeak. “I’m sorry. I just . . . they made me.” he whimpers. “I can’t believe you! I need to help her.” I flap my wings and get ready to fly down. “Wait!” Matt grabs my shoulders and pulls me toward him trying to kiss me. I push him away and punch him right in the nose. “What the hell Matt! You can’t shoot my best friend and try to kiss me!” I yell. Matt looks down. “Whatever. Forget this. Fuck you.” I murmur flying down.

I see John running with May still in his arms. I land in front of him. He crashes into me and we both fall down. “May!” I shout leaping to my feet. “Matt shot her.” John explains. Her eyes are closed. “Is she . . .” My voice leaves me. Have I lost my best friend? “She’s gonna be okay. She still has a pulse.” John insists. “I need to get her to Le Café and give her the healing medicine but there are cops surrounding the school.” He informs me breathlessly. “Okay, you give me May and I’ll fly high enough so the cops won’t see me. You stay here and transform back to normal.” I plot. John nods and takes a shaky breath. His blue hair turns black and his green eyes turn blue. He looks like a normal flirtatious 11th grader again. “Good.” I say gently lifting May from his arms. “You gonna be okay?” I ask him getting ready to fly. He nods. I take one last lingering glance at the tree tops and see Matt. We hold eye contact for a second but I give him the finger and fly off with May.

I fly over flashing red and blue lights with May in my arms. None of the cops see me as I fly over to Le Café. I land in front of the building and stand by the front door. I run in and run upstairs to the Healing Room. I set May down on the bed and take the lid off a bottle of medicine. I pour it between her lips and she swallows it. She coughs and sits up. I wrap her into a hug. “Krys! May!” a voice booms. I whirl around to see B.B standing in the doorway. “Thank God you’re okay! I heard about the shooting on the news.” He explains. “What happened?” he asks eyeing May’s blood-soaked shirt. “I don’t really know. Matt has a gun and he shot May. I know John is okay but that’s all I know.” I say breathlessly. B.B takes a shaky breath. “The others will be okay. I know it.” He looks at May with pity. “Matt did that?” he asks. May nods a little. I look down. I was wrong about Matt.
