Krys

A million years ago, May found out my secret about my bird DNA. A little later she almost died in the school shooting. Now, I noticed she doesn’t like Super Six. It’s not that she dislikes the members of Super Six but she doesn’t like the concept. Fighting life-or-death battles every day and always being in danger. I can tell she is scared so I decide to talk to her about it. One day, at Le Café, she’s sitting with Steve, Jake and Drew. I wait until she’s alone and I pull over a bright green chair. “Hello,” I begin. She gives me a small smile. “Hey.” she replies softly. “So . . . how are you liking Super Six?” I ask casually. She bites her lip and looks around.

“I hate it.” She says angrily. I’m startled by how blunt she is. “Well . . . why do you hate it?” I sound like an over-enthusiastic kindergarten teacher. May raises one eyebrow. “No offense or anything but why would anyone like being in a group that’s always in danger of being murdered?” She sounds a little mad. “I guess that true,” I pause. “You don’t like knowing about Super Six do you?” She shakes her head. “Well . . . I just want you to know we’d never let you or anyone else get hurt.” I insist. She nods but her bright green eyes still burn with anger. I stand up to leave. Her eyes soften. “Krys,” she begins. “Yeah?” I ask. “Thanks.”

A few days after talking to May, I’m at school when I find a note in my locker.

Krys, I need to talk to you. Meet me in the garden at eight

-Matt

I study the note for a while. I scan the hallways to see if Matt is lurking around somewhere. I only see kids trudging to their next class. Our school is still pretty depressed. Hopefully the nice spring weather will cheer us up. I look at the note and smile thinking of the note left in my locker that led me to join Super Six. I shrug and decide to meet Matt in the garden at 8. I wonder what he has to talk to me about. I wonder if he’s going to ask me out officially. Maybe he’ll say he loves me. If he does, will I say the same? My head is full of questions for the rest of the school day and at Le Café. Questions whirl around my brain until I finally arrive at the garden at eight exactly.

I see a dull yellow glow and smile knowing Matt’s here already. “Matt?” I call out. His head pops out of a rosebush. Typical Matt. “Hey Krys.” He says eagerly. “You . . . uh . . . wanted to talk to me?” he asks hopefully. “Wait what? I thought you wanted to talk to me.” I insist confused. “But you left me a note didn’t you?” he asks. I shake my head even though I doubt he sees in the dark. “No . . . you left me a note.” I try to piece this together in my mind. “I think we’ve been tricked.” Matt hisses. He snatches my hand and pulls me into the rosebush. I see an orange glow approach us. It’s Nick! I hold my breath. “Matt?” His voice calls out. “Krys?” He yells. I hear twigs snap and I try to make myself as small as possible. I feel Matt’s arm around me comforting me. I feel better until the leaves of the bush separate and Nick peers in at us. “You two makin’ out in here?” he teases. I transform and shoot him with a blue beam. I flap my wings and fly out of the rosebush. I feel him grab my foot but I kick his head. I fly off and don’t stop until I’m safely at Le Café. But when I turn around, I don’t see Matt anywhere.

I burst into Le Café and run inside. I’m glad we’re closed so no customers see me. “He’s gone!” I shout breathlessly. “What? Who is?” Jenny asks. “Matt! We were in the garden and then Nick came so I flew away and I can’t find him!” I cry. “Calm down. You can find him on B.B’s map.” John suggests. I take a breath, dash to the backroom and push B.B right off his chair. I need to find Matt!” I scream. He stands up, brushes himself off and scowls at me. “God Krys.” He murmurs. He pushes the chair away from the screen with me on it and stands in front of his giant computer. He clicks around a little. “Matt is at the warehouse.” He informs me. I nod and start going out the door. Right before I get out of Le Café May stops me. “WAIT!” she cries. I stop short and whirl around. “Why?” I ask hurriedly. “I’m coming.” She says confidently. I don’t have time to ask her why or even to be surprised. “Alright.” I say dashing out the door followed by my best friend.

I start flying as fast as I can but May can’t keep up. She stumbles and falls because she’s running so fast. I stop and land in front of her. “Just get on my back.” I order. I give her a look so she knows we don’t have much time. If Rob and Scotch beat us to the warehouse Matt is dead. She hops on my back and I fly off. She’s just about the skinniest girl I know. I can easily glide around with her on my back. I fly to the warehouse and up to the window ledge. I look down at Nick and Matt. Nick is using one hand to hold Matt’s hands behind his back. In his other hand, he holds a knife by Matt’s neck. Matt is frozen in place, his hazel eyes huge and he’s shaking like a leaf. “LET HIM GO!” a voice shrieks beside me. I’m astonished to see that voice is coming from my timid friend May. She leaps down from the window sill. She clumsily falls but leaps back onto her feet in an instant. “May?” Matt asks shocked. I fly down and land next to her.

“Get out of here bitches.” Nick growls angrily. “No way! Let Matt go!” May shouts. “Yeah!” I shout. I feel like me and May switched places. “I can’t!” Nick shouts angrily. “Just let him fucking go!” I shout stepping forward. Nick brings his knife closer to Matt’s neck so the blade just barely brushes his skin. I step back. “Move any closer and your pathetic boyfriend dies.” He threatens. “He’s not pathetic and you know it.” May says fiercely. Nick frowns but he doesn’t argue. “Just . . . please lemme go.” Matt begs timidly. He’s not afraid of Nick. Only Rob and Scotch. I bite my lip and wonder if they’ll be dropping by any time soon. Nick shakes his head. “You all know perfectly well I can’t and I won’t.” He pulls Matt closer to him. May runs over to him. “Stop it! Let him go! What did he ever do to you?” she demands fiercely. “He betrayed me.” Nick mutters. I rush to May’s side. “No. You’re betraying him. Right now.” I insist. Matt nods a little. His face looks pretty pale. “Ugh!” Nick shouts. He brings his knife down to his side and shoves Matt away from him.

“I’ll just tell Rob and Scotch he escaped.” Nick mutters to himself. I knew Rob and Scotch were involved here! Matt wraps him into a hug. “Thanks.” Matt whispers happily. Nick blushes and pats Matt on the back. “Yeah . . . whatever.” He mumbles. Matt opens a portal. “You know you can always come with us.” he reminds Nick who simply shakes his head. “Don’t push your luck.” Matt frowns as he, May and I slip into the portal. I feel his hand squeeze mine. I smile and blush. I also smile for my best friend. I’m proud of her.
