The days after the shooting make me feel like I’m in a trance. I’m glad I managed to save May but it was my fault she got shot. I shouldn’t have told her to come with me when I went outside to find Matt. She’s fine now but she’s scared. She doesn’t come to Le Café anymore. School hasn’t opened again yet and no one knows if it will. There’s no damage to the building but we’re all still grieving. As far as things are with our glowing rivals, only Hunter has seen Joe since the shooting. Apparently, Joe isn’t even that sorry since he tried to shoot Hunter when they were at Katy’s grave. Luckily, Hunter is getting better about Katy’s death. Krys is still furious at Matt. I don’t know why but I can find it in my heart to forgive him. He gave me and May a chance to escape before he shot her and it was all obviously under Rob and Scotch’s command. But Krys always scowls at whoever brings him up in conversation. She always talks shit about him and takes every chance to mention how much she hates him.
I remember the connection Krys and Matt had in the garden. They were cute and they really like each other. I can’t deny that even though Krys hates Matt, I’m still routing for them. One day at Le Café, I search for Mute. I see him in the kitchen playing on his phone. “Hey Mute,” I begin. He looks up. “Yeah?” he asks annoyed. “I was going to go to the park to find someone. Do you wanna come?” I ask. I don’t want to go alone and Mute is the only boy in Super Six who’s close to my age. He debates, looking at his phone and out the window. He shrugs. “Why not? I’ve got nothing better to do.” He murmurs. He stands up. “Who are you looking for?” he asks. I stay silent. “Is it a girl?” he asks grinning. I remain silent. “Well let’s go. We can’t keep love waiting.” He jokes. I appreciate his slightly more outgoing personality but I need to find Matt and talk to him. Not go hunting for chicks.
I walk quickly. I’m heading towards the garden. Mute huffs trying to walk fast enough to keep up with me. I slow down and he takes a sigh of relief. “But really, who are you looking for?” he persists as we walk down the cement path leading to the garden. “Well . . . don’t tell Krys but I want to talk to Matt.” I explain. Mute stops and gawks at me. “He shot May! Why would you go looking for trouble?” he snaps. I scowl at him. “Look, you can come with me or leave now but I need to talk with him. I don’t think Krys and the rest of us should hate him for something he was forced to do.” I explain. Mute stares at me. “I won’t tell Krys, but I’m not helping you find the guy who almost killed you and shot your friend.” He mutters walking off.
I follow the path to the garden. I step over bushes and over bright flowers. “Who’s there?” a scared voice demands. It’s coming from a rose bush. I walk up to the bush covered in bright pink flowers. It looks like something out of a cartoon. Through the shiny, deep green leaves, I spot two big ears, a yellow glow and two big teary eyes. “Matt?” I ask looking into the bush. He leaps out of the bush and opens a portal but I reach out and grab his wrist. “It’s okay. I’m not gonna fight you.” I coo like he’s a scared animal. He falls to the ground crying and choking on tears. “She hates me.” he whispers. “Who?” I ask even though we both know he’s referring to Krys. “It’s Krys. I’m sorry I shot May. I just . . . they were gonna kill me and my family unless I did something.” He says in between gasps of air. I look down at him with pity.
Hunter bawls when his first love dies the day she asks him out. Jenny cries when her best friend dies. Matt cries over stupid crush problems. He was the one who shot May. But Rob and Scotch made him. “So what are you doing here then?” I ask sitting down beside him. He shrugs. “This is where . . .” he begins but then stops. This is where he and Krys came to talk but he doesn't know I know about that. “Never mind.” He mutters quickly. “You should know that I heard you and Krys talking here one night.” I explain. His face turns red. “Oh.” He says softly. “I didn’t tell the rest of Super Six. Your secrets safe with me.” I insist. “Well there’s no secret anymore. Krys hasn’t come here to talk in like a million years.” Matt whispers. “Maybe you should just talk to her. You did give us a chance to run.” I point out. “You think she’ll forgive me?” he asks hopefully. He picks up a blue and purple rose and picks at its petals. I give a little nod. “I forgive you.” I add. Matt grins and hugs me. “I think maybe I can get Krys back. Thanks.” He whispers. I awkwardly hug him back. He’s a persistent kid, I think to myself. I hope Krys forgives him too.
