Mute

I’ve always been an outcast at school. I haven’t had real friends since I was little. Now I think of Hunter as a friend. I’m not that close to him but since I saved him we talk more. One day at school, I end up going from an outcast to a hero. I’m in 2nd period in history class when the fire alarm goes off. The class gets up getting ready to follow the fire drill procedure but the teacher is in the bathroom so we don’t know where to go. “What do we do?” a pudgy kid asks. “Should we leave?” another brunette girl asks. I can barely hear an announcement saying we’re under a lockdown. Another kid hears it too. “We’re under a lockdown!” she cries over the other voices. “So what do we do? Go under our desks?” the pudgy kid asks. “I guess.” another voice replies. I duck under my desk along with the other students. I don’t know why we’re under a lockdown until I hear a gunshot. Now I know.

We’re stuck under our desks for hours. I hear occasional whispering but almost everyone is too scared to speak. After a few hours one kid sits up quickly. “Did anyone remember to lock the door?” he asks. Some kids gasp. We look around hoping someone will say they did. “Someone go lock it.” a voice hisses. “There’s no way I’m getting up.” The pudgy kid says firmly. “I’ll get shot.” Another girl with big green eyes whines. I decide if no one else takes action I have to. If the shooters get in they could very well kill us all. I stand up and walk over to the door. I feel the other kids’ eyes on me. I hear little whispers around the room. “What’s he doing?” “Where is Mute going?” I’m about to lock the door when it swings open knocking me down. I fall on my butt and look to see three boys in hoodies and jeans. They have shades and you can barely see their faces. The only reason I recognize them is because they’re glowing red, orange and yellow.

I can’t transform now without blowing my cover so I leap to my feet and glare at them. “Leave.” I growl through clenched teeth. “Not now.” Joe mutters pointing his gun at me. I slap it out of his hand. I shove him against the wall and kick his ribs. He collapses on the floor. I hear a gunshot and a bullet whizzes past me just missing my hair. I see a tiny bit of smoke coming out of Matt’s yellow gun. He just shot at me! I lift my foot and kick Matt’s balls. He falls over next to Joe. I hear another gunshot followed by a sharp pain in my ankle. I lean on the wall to balance myself and glare at Nick. He shoots again hitting my arm. I shriek and fight the throbbing pain in my ankle and arm. I shove Nick against the wall. I pin his arms at his sides. I turn back to the terrified students. “Run!” I shout to them. They take off out of the classroom screaming.

I grab Nick’s gun from his hand. “Leave or I’ll shoot you.” I threaten shoving the gun into his chest. He grabs it back. “Dick.” He mutters as teleports away. I turn to Joe and Matt. “Fucker.” Joe murmurs as he joins Nick. I glance over at Matt and point my gun at him. Matt looks like a scared puppy. I lower my eyebrows. He looks at me like a deer in headlights. I might see a tear drip down his cheek as he teleports away.
