John

I used to eat lunch with my friends that were girls. Lately, I’ve taken to leaving the lunch room and roaming the hallways. One day, I’m in the hallway when a deafening alarm goes off. I cover my ears and look around. I’m the only person in the hallway. I hear the P.A. crackle. I can’t hear anything but something about a lockdown. I look around debating whether to run out the door, into a classroom or cower in the boys’ room. It may just be a false alarm. Our school’s fire alarm goes off all the time. The fire trucks will come to our school and leave with a burnt bagel or something. But I feel it in my gut this is real. “John!” a high-pitched voice shrieks. I whirl around to see May running out of the girls’ room and over to me. “Did you hear that announcement?” she asks breathlessly. “Not really. Did you?” I ask. She nods. “Someone has a gun. The school’s on lockdown.” She explains. A gun? I only know three people who have access to a gun. “Do you think maybe the shooters are who we think?” she asks. “I’m gonna find out.” I explain. I study May. She’s small and skinny. It’s dangerous to take her with me but it’s worse to leave her abandoned in a school where someone has a gun. “Come with me.” I order.

I take out my gem and transform. Me and May run out the nearest exit. It’s chilly and the air is crisp outside. “John! May!” a voice hisses from the tree. I look up to see Matt fly down from a tree. “What are you doing?” I demand. He has a yellow gun in his left hand. “I don’t even know. I can’t believe I’m holding this gun! Just leave while you can.” He pleads. “Leave you to shoot innocent kids?” I ask raising one eyebrow. “Just don’t shoot anyone.” May suggests. Matt shakes his head. “Just leave.” He begs again. “No.” I say firmly. May crosses her arms. “I’m not going anywhere until you get rid of your stupid gun.” She says boldly. “I’m sorry.” He whispers. He holds out his gun and shoots May right below her chest. She falls to the ground. “MATT!” I screech shocked. His face turns white staring down at May. She’s still breathing but very weakly. Matt looks from May to me and teleports away.

“Are you okay?” I ask softly kneeling down beside her. Tears pour out of her eyes. “I’m gonna die.” She whispers sobbing. “You’re gonna be okay. I’ll take you back to Le Café and give you the healing medicine.” I coo. She weakly shakes her head. “Just leave me to die. You can go stop Matt from hurting anyone else.” She weeps. “There’s no way I’m leaving you.” I scoop her up in my arms. She’s just as light as I expect being a short, skinny twig. I feel her collapse in my arms. Her eyes are closed. My heart races and beads of sweat dot my forehead. Is she dead? I feel her pulse. Her heart thumps weakly. Poor May. She’s fine for now. She was scared of stuff relating to Super Six from the start and now she’s got a good reason. Her golden hair glows in the sun and she takes short, shaky breaths. I take off running to Le Café. I need to save her. I can’t let her die in my arms. It wasn’t a good idea for her to come with me. I stop in front of the school when I see a ton of cop cars. I back away from them. I can’t let them see me transformed. I’m running out of time. I quickly run behind the school. I think I might hear some gunshots but I ignore them and sprint forward. I try to find another way to get away from the building until I crash into someone knocking them down. I look at the ground and see Krys looking back up at me.
