Rose

After the warehouse blew up, we found Krys, or Krystal in the rubble, severely injured. We all rushed Krys, or Krystal, back to Le Café. When we gave her the healing medicine, we were terrified thinking we lost her but she turned out to be fine. The days run together right after the battle. Rob and Scotch are nowhere to be found and honestly I doubt they survived. Krys only survived because she was so close to the door she just got blown out of the warehouse. We keep working at Le Café but now it’s for fun. School is ending pretty soon. We only have like a month left. Maybe in September the kids will be a bit happier. As for right now school sucks. Joy has been treating me worse than shit. One day after I’ve had enough I decide to confront her. She’s at her locker. “Joy,” I begin. “Ugh! What do you want? I’m busy.” She whines. She’s doing great at proving she’s not a good friend. “Listen. I’m gonna be honest with you right now. You’ve been treating me really badly lately and I’m tired of it.” I say calmly but seriously. “Oh my God! I can’t believe you just said that. What the fuck?” she says angrily. “You know, you used to be nice and cool. But then you started hanging out with those creeps-” I cut her off. “What creeps?” I ask trying to contain my anger. “You know, like, that immature 12 year old, and that anti-social shut-in, and that hyper-active little girl. Like, do you even know what that girl did to me?” she asks exasperated. “No Joy. I don’t give a shit what that girl,” I stop myself. “My friend did to you.” I sound confident and it makes me smile.

“Oh my God! You’re smiling! I can’t believe you! You’re such an idiot!” Joy shouts like she did in history class. “Shut up! I’m not an idiot! Listen, you’re mean, and rude, and you have shit to say about everyone in this whole godamn school! And you know what? I’m tired of it! I have friends that are 1000 times realer than you’ll ever be. I don’t need you! Not if you’re going to treat me this way.” I say adrenaline pumping through me. It feels awesome to say those words. Of course, knowing Joy, she needs the last word. And as usual it starts with, “Oh my God! You’re such a freak. I can’t even begin to tell you how stupid you sound and-” A voice interrupts her. “God just shut up Joy! She doesn’t want to be your friend so just stop talking. And honestly I don’t blame her.” Jake! I whirl around to see my knight in shining armor. “Oh my-” “No just stop. We’re leaving. Good-bye.” Jake says taking my hand. We walk off together. Joy continues to yell at us while we leave but I can’t even hear her.

“Wow that girl is a jerk.” Jake exclaims when we’re finally alone. I nod studying his red cheeks. Why is he blushing? “Uh . . . yeah.” He says. I smile at the fact his awkwardness is the same brand as mine. I guess after standing up to Joy I’m feeling pretty confident so I put my hands on his shoulders and kiss him hard. He kisses back. This isn’t an intense kiss; it’s more a smooth, gentle beginner’s kiss. For the first time in my life I feel like I can fly. We finally defeated Rob and Scotch, I have close friends and maybe a boyfriend. Joy is out of my life for good. So I let my shoulders slump and stop feeling so nervous. I just rest in the moment until our lips part.
