Just wanna explained that when Plann confessed his Love for Ae, they were both 15 years old, thats why Ae reacted like that, they were both young and Ae has this strong and hard mentality that he only accepts things that he is familiar of.
Since birth, he was taught that a man should always fall in love with a girl and vice versa...
Actually, this also goes with our past and present society... this mentality, which migh be forever imprinted in our heads.
I'm not forcing my beliefs on anyone but for me "LOVE is genderless", because I hope it to be.
Its not just the physical aspect of a person you'd fall to, but the inner personality of that person.
Anyway, moving on...
Pond thinks, what Ae needs is someone contant, someone who have a very deep understanding, someone pure. And that is Pete for him, a pure existence.
But Pete, also has this mentality of being a pacifist, that can be his strength or a weakness and you will come to know it as the story progress on.
