Love.

Love?

Miles said he loved talking to her.

What was that suppose to mean?

Was he trying to imply something bigger in a simple sentence?

Or did he simply mean that he enjoyed talking to her?

But, if that were the case then why did he use a word so powerful?

A small four-letter word that wasn't meant to be thrown around carelessly but has the power to make hearts swell and mend the fragments of broken ones.

Or was Kenzie just reading in between the lines a little too much?

Kenzie felt as if she had been walking in a never-ending cycle ever since her call had ended with Miles. She wondered why her heart skipped a beat and why she didn't freeze in fear when she heard the most powerful four-letter word that was foreign to her ears. She couldn't stop thinking about it even as the last ticking of the ancient clock stopped and the chime echoed throughout the house letting her a know a new day had just begun.

Kenzie wasn't familiar with love. It didn't feel right as it rolled off her tongue and into the dark halls, but it didn't feel wrong enough for her to let go of it.

Never in her eighteen years of existence had she witnessed love between her supposed role models. To them, marriage wasn't a ceremony to bind two people who loved each other. No, it was done to strengthen businesses and make selfish people richer.

You see,

Kenzie had come from a family where money was favored over family.

Where business meetings were prioritized over family dinners.

Where foes became friends and friends became foes.

Where vengeance always won against forgiveness.

And where hate replaced love.

Love was intended for the weak and saying the word out loud into the open was cowardly, but Kenzie knew better than what she had been taught, she never agreed with the teachings she had grown up with.

Instead, she had grown up learning from her older siblings and familiarized herself with the honest foundations of life, but never took the time to learn how to simply love.

It was just a word she looked up once in the dictionary with a meaning so vague it left her puzzled.

Because she knew a word so powerful could not be defined, but only expressed with actions she was unfamiliar with.

As Kenzie made her way up the spiral stairs walking towards her bedroom with the thoughts still looming in her head she came across a reflection she didn't recognize.

It was a reflection of a girl whose cheeks were tinted a berry pink with ever clear dewy skin. She was staring right back at Kenzie, but what Kenzie couldn't stop staring at were the girl's eyes. They were magnificent and bright, and when the light from the ceiling above hit in just the right spot they sparkled every shade of blue with gold specks glimmering from within, just like an opal would.

They were beautiful, unique, and so alive.

As Kenzie continued to stare she was granted an entrance to the windows of the girl's soul. A soul all too familiar to hers, and when she looked deeper she was stunned and struck with disbelief.

The girl staring back at Kenzie was a reflection of her own self, and to make sure it wasn't an allusion messing with her already troubled mind; she traced the simple curves and dents on her face only for the reflection to mimic her.

It really was her and all Kenzie could do was stare with wide eyes into the mirror that carried her reflection.

Kenzie didn't know she could ever look this alive.

She didn't know that her colorless cheeks could flush a pinkish hue.

She didn't know her dull skin could glow from within.

She didn't know her lifeless eyes could sparkle so bright.

She didn't know her heart could beat a little faster just from hearing a voice.

Or her stomach could flutter from thinking about it.

And when the phone in Kenzie's hand began to ring she didn't know her lips could automatically curve upwards and tingles of excitement and nervousness could run through the course of her body in anticipation.

Nor did Kenzie know that these were all the signs of someone falling in love.
