Chapter Five
Letitia's Life
Part One
When Letitia awoke, she had no memory of what had happened, where she was or who was with her. But she could hear a familiar voice. Her eyes were open, but she could not see. She moved her mouth to speak but there was no sound.
As she tried to move her arms she found them seemingly glued to the floor, as were her ankles. She blinked several times, quickly, to see if her eyes would work, and slowly the view above her came into focus. She was lying on the floor, bare wood splintering into her skin. She winced in pain when she tried to move her head to look around. What happened?
Dangling above her was a light bulb, no lightshade, just a bare light bulb, swinging slightly. The roof was a beautiful dark oak wood, with carvings that made her relax a little, until she realised that she could be in mortal danger.
She could feel the ground vibrating but could not figure out why. Suddenly a door creaked open on another floor, and she heard heavy footsteps thudding up some stairs, those, too, creaked, under the weight of the person, or thing, approaching. The steps got closer and Letitia's heart started to beat faster, until she could hear it in her ears and thought her heart was going to burst through her chest. The door opened.
"Letitia." A low, rumbling voice said quietly from the doorway. "Nice to see you again. Don't worry, you'll be able to move soon. But not before I have said what I need to. There's something I need you to do for me. If you don't, I will send my guys to Baltimore. You know who lives in Baltimore, don't you?" He saw her eyes widen. "That's right! Your sister. Who believes you're dead from what I gather. Because you're a Demon Hunter and she isn't?"
A rasp escaped her lungs and made its way from her mouth making a squeaking sound.
"Thing is... She is. She shares the same blood as you. She'll be, what, almost twenty-two now? Old enough to start noticing things that aren't really there. Anyway, here's what I want you to do."
Part Two
Michael, mostly known as Mikey or Mick, walked from his girlfriend's house, to his mother's house. It was a short walk of ten minutes, but he threw his coat on anyway. It was forecast to rain tonight, maybe even sleet. He hated rain, hated sleet, but loved the snow, so he was hoping the weather would skip the rain and sleet and go straight to a full-blown blizzard.
His girlfriend, however, liked the rain, and detested summer. Cassandra had wanted him to stay the night, but he had to look after his mother, who was sick with the flu. He wished she would be better soon; his twenty-fourth birthday was only a week away and he'd planned a big party at his girlfriend's uncles house and had a lot of friends wanting to come along.
Cassandra rang him around two minutes after he left. "Is anyone following you tonight?"
"No, and there wasn't last night. I swear, you're seeing things." He paused to look behind him anyway, just to make sure. And just as he thought, there was no one there. It was half past eleven at night, and the streets were deserted.
On the way home, he encountered on or two drunk men slumped in a shop doorway, one had a woman with him trying to lift him to his feet and failing spectacularly. Another was just standing against a wall, slumped over like a zombie. His arms hanging loosely by his sides, just swinging like pendulums. He ignored them and carried on walking. He got home, and his mother was at the door, smoking a cigarette.
"You should be in bed, resting. You're sick." He said to his mother as he walked up the steps to the house.
"Oh, don't be silly, I'm fine. I'm going to bed after this anyway." She gave him a light kiss on the cheek. "Who was that man you were with?"
