Chapter Twenty-Seven –

Becoming Dark

Part One

Letitia and Kaine were just outside the cemetery with Skarlet and Lars when a dizzy, and disoriented, Cody emerged. "Girls, get in here!" He warned Ava and Jessika, who ducked as they ran into the cemetery. Bolts of light and remnants of fireballs hurtled past them as they ran. Cody led them to a small building which he assumed used to be occupied to a groundskeeper. He barged the wooden door open with his shoulder. It took a few attempts but when it finally swung violently open he ushered the two girls inside. "Wait here until I come and get you." He rushed back out, the door slamming behind him as he went.

Suddenly the two girls inside were left in almost complete darkness. "So we're just supposed to wait here until it's over?"

"I'm guessing so." Ava replied.

"What if he forgets we're here?"

"He won't."

"But what if-"

"Stop being so negative. He will come back." Ava interrupted. Secretly she was worried too, but she did not want to worry her friend even more. Be brave, she told herself.

But horrible thoughts kept coming to her. What if a demon senses we are here and attacks us? What if Cody does forget we are in here? What if something happens to Cody, and no one else knows we are hiding here? She kept those questions to herself though.

Cody's head was clearing now, but it still pounded. At least I am not dizzy anymore, I can walk straight, he thought as he ran back towards Letitia, pulling out his sword and wand. Demons of all sizes, and different levels of gross, were everywhere. Cody slashed out at one of the fireball wielding demons and the thing just disintegrated, as though it was made from a cluster of embers, crumbling and cooling to ash as it fell. "Hmm, well that was easy." He shrugged and whipped his hair out of his face and lunged at another, spurting blood and demon slime while he shot a green bolt of light at another demon who was fast approaching. Three demons killed already.

He saw Skarlet in the middle of a crowd of Lokey demons, the kind which had killed Katia, and sprinted towards her, knowing that no matter how much of a warrior she was, she could really use his help right now. He stopped dead when he saw Jayden running over the courtyard, with Charlie and London following reluctantly behind. Jayden jumped up onto a wall, leaped into the air and brought down his sword hard into a demons head, pulling the demon down with him to the floor.

The demon started convulsing beneath Jayden as he tore the sword from its head, bringing out slime, blood, and brains with it, splattering his face. He stood up and ran to Skarlet, and grabbed her by the waist, dragging her to the ground as a demon's fireball narrowly missed them. "Nice of you to show your face." Skarlet said between breaths.

"Sorry, something's happened-" he ducked as a demon took a swipe at them with a scaly clawed hand. They rolled as he stuck his sword into the demon's chest. "But I'll explain later." He kissed her lips quickly and jumped back to his feet, pulling her up by the hand as he did so.

Part Two.

Kirstie was alone. One-minute Skarlet and Tria had been with her, the next they were gone.

Only six foot was what separated her from the biggest, ugliest demon she had ever seen.

It was a murky green colour, with slimy skin, bright blue eyes, and no teeth at all. But its hands were adorned with claws, blood dripping from every one of them.

She had been doing well. Fighting was her forte, but one demon had managed to knock her off course and she now lay on the ground, unable to move her legs.

She looked down and saw that one of the demons claws had broken off in her calf, securing her to the ground. It was too painful to pull the claw out, and also knew she would bleed out profusely if she did.

But on the other hand she wanted it out as soon as possible. She could feel the demon poison taking effect. She was lightheaded, seeing double and growing weak. The skin around the claw in her leg was started to turn to a bluish colour, meaning she did not have much time left. But there was no one around to help. She couldn't scream and couldn't move. As her vision started getting darker, she noticed more of these creatures moving towards her. Encircling her, snarling, and howling, almost mocking her.

She closed her eyes tight. I knew this is how I would die...
