Chapter Six
The Plan To Save Letitia
Part One
Katia eventually found Skarlet and Damon as they were making their way through the massive garden, where exotic flowers grew unusually rapidly, small lights hung along the walkway, and small angelic ornaments decorated the grass. She called their names and both of them whirled around. Skarlet, red-faced and clearly crying looked at Katia with a 'how dare you' expression, whereas Damon just looked confused.
"Go away, I need to find Letitia." Skarlet screamed.
"That's the thing. You won't find her. Especially not on your own. We need to prepare." Katia looked to Damon who seemed to have been trying to calm Skarlet down. "Thanks. For not letting her leave." She smiled at him as Skarlet shoved past them and made her way back up towards their Hall.
A door slammed, making Kaine and Toby jump. This was the first conversation that Toby had ever heard Kaine have, and so was not about to let Skarlet's interruption make him forget what he was saying. "Anyway, you said your mother is a trainer here?" Toby reminded him where their conversation was left off.
"No. Was." Kaine said. He looked as though he was flipping hair out of his face, except the fact that Kaine had short hair. Toby didn't want to assume it was a tear that he saw the older boy wipe away. And to be honest, he didn't think he would believe it if it were. These people all seemed so strong, brave, and like they didn't know how to cry.
"Oh." Well, that'll be the end of that conversation.
But it wasn't. "She died a few years ago, during a battle."
"Oh, yeah. I remember."
Kaine nodded. "We don't talk about it much."
"Yeah, well, I wouldn't either. I don't." Toby thought about his parents and didn't blame Kaine for not speaking much. He sucked in a deep breath and said. "Your parents saved my life."
For the first time since Toby had known him, Kaine's face showed some emotion. More like surprise. His left eyebrow raised, and he glanced sideways at Toby. "Really?"
"Yeah. I don't really know what was going on, and I still don't, but they pulled me out of the path of a mons- sorry, Demon - and that's when I met Katia."
"Did you see my parents after that?"
"No." He didn't want to say he had practically stood on top of their dead bodies as Katia whisked him to Aura. So, he left it at just, "I didn't. Probably wouldn't have noticed if I had. It was all a blur."
"Want me to help you during weapons training?" Kaine suddenly changed the subject.
Toby was shocked. He actually wants to be around me.
"Of course, that would be great."
"Hey, you know, before you start training, there's something I want to show you." Kaine said.
"Oh, yeah? What's that?"
"The weapons room."
"But isn't that in here?" Toby asked, as he started to follow Kaine out of the hall.
"Well, there is one in here. But that's for practice. I'm talking about the weapons room." Kaine went over to Jovah who was instructing the others, who were doing laps of the hall. Toby couldn't hear what he was saying, but he saw Jovah nod, and pat Kaine on the arm.
After the twentieth lap of the hall, they were to start on the climbing walls, and practice jumping and falling, so they knew how to not hurt themselves, or get away in a pursuit. As they brought the walls out from the sides of the room, Zavier turned to Skarlet. "Are you okay? You seemed pretty upset earlier."
